I was wondering if it's worth upgrading my 2630QM processor to the 2nd Generation Intel® Core™ i7-2760QM Processor?

Now i know it avoids warranty, but is the upgrade worth it?

I mainly do Graphic design on the Go, so as you know Every GHz is kinda useful for Maya rendering and such. of course im also a gamer 😛

according to their stats. they are very similar and i know the G74 motherboard can support it.

Please if anyone here upgraded their G74 Processor let me know if it was worth the trouble, money and if it's running smoothly and doesn't overheat the laptop.

Also i take open suggestion for other processors.

It won't overheat the laptop, as those two chips have the same TDP (Thermal Design Power). I haven't upgraded my CPU, but for 20% baseline jump, you'll notice a difference. If the CPU is socketed, then go ahead and do it. If it is soldered, there is no way you can do it--or anyone else for that matter--surface-mount soldering on computers is done by robotics.
I am disturbed because I cannot break my system...found out there were others trying to cope! We have a support group on here, if your system will not break, please join!

To answer your question, it is socketed and will work. I have changed my processor to the 2760 . I just so happen to have the 2670 for sale 150.00 if interested. its only 3 weeks old. if interested my mail is atournear@hotmail.com
thanks

@pa2806n, just a note, selling isn't allowed. No worries, though, the mods won't eat you. 🙂

Hey sorry. I didnt know that. Its not what he is looking for anyways.

Ok, to answer the question . I have an I7-2760QM that I installed in G74. I also put 8 gigs 2x4 config Kingston 1600 MHZ PNP and it runs like a champ. I can confirm that it will work for a fact. The down side is this is not an easy laptop to take apart. It will also void your warrenty. I would not recommend this if you dont have experience working on laptops. I think that I have worked on about 40 + and this one is by far the hardest that I have done. I had an Asus G60 JX that I changed the processor in. It only took me 5 min to do it. You just pop of the back cover and theres the processor. That was a great laptop. The G74SX will make you work for it. The process will take about 2 to 3 hrs. The worst part is the keyboard, if you mess up one of the connectors you are done, or any other one under the board. If you dont feel up to the task , take it to a local computer shop to have it installed.
Hope this helps
Atticus

Just a last note I can only confirm that 8 gigs of Kingston HyperX 1600 MHZ PNP will work. 8 for sure. 16??????

I have the g53 with 2630qm and it runs 4x4gb corsair vengeance at 1600mhz, if that was your question. So you don't even need the more expensive kingston pnp's.
