Do I have a dead DIMM channel?

TZeer
Level 7
Have installed 4x4gb on a Rampage Formula

BIOS and Win7 only shows 12gb.

Looking in the BIOS on DIMM post, it states it has memory installed in all channels.

But when using memtest86+ it comes up with this:

ChannelA-DIMM1 Empty Unknown Unknown
Mapped to: No Mapping (Interleved Device)

Channel B, C and D are showing speed, size and type. And adress it`s mapped to.

Tried switching around on the memory, no change.

Also tried to post with only memory in channel A, would not post.

Was stuck on a code bb or 66...

Also took out and sat in the CPU again, just to be sure.

I`m out of options on what else to do except return the whole thing.

Could you list your system specs please mate then maybe we can help further.

As a matter of interest what is CPU-Z showing is installed????

i7 3820
Asus Rampage IV Formula
Kingston SSD 120 Gb
4x4Gb Corsair Dominators
Nvidia GTX 580
Win 7 Home Premium

Latest BIOS, drivers etc. Downloaded and installed yesteday.

CPU-Z is showing 12Gb as well.

Using the ROG CPU_Z atm, when looking at the SPD tab, it`s all empty. No data at all.

Could you list your system specs please mate then maybe we can help further. What exact part number is the RAM??

What I would do first is do a full system clear take battery out with CPU out of board. Then rebuild the board. With only CPU inseted, cooler and VGA in slot one. Now reseat all the RAM. listen for two distinct clicks as you place it in. Now boot the board. Enable XMP, set the VDDR voltage to 1.65, VCCSA to 1.25 and VTT to 1.25. In Dram timings also set Rampage Tweak mode one. Now check Bios and CPU-Z in Windows for alll 16gb being installed. I never trust WIndows to report this stuff correct;ly.

Post back how this goes.

Did that earlier today.

Put this build together yesterday.

- Put everything together yesteday
- At first boot, saw I only had 12 Gb available, thought it would help getting the newest BIOS/Drivers
- Got drivers, updates etc finnished today, still same issue
- Played around in BIOS, with X.M.P, compatibility mode etc
- Still no joy, took out and rearranged the memory sticks, just to be sure everything was seated properly
- No change, ran intelburntest, no problems, ran windows memory tester, no problem
- Ran memtest86+, discovered that there was no RAM reported in DIMM channelA
- Took out memory in DIMM channle A and replaced with another one, no change
- Took out all memory and put a "good" one in DIMM channel A only, would not boot (dunno if this is due to fault, or the way the motherboard is supposed to be)
- Took out memory again, also re-seated the CPU, checked for bent pins and debris or anything physically in the DIMM slot.
- Put everything back together again, got notification that new CPU was installed and had to enter F1 to setup again. No joy with memory.

What I didnt do was removing the CMOS battery. Will add that as well next time I pull it apart again. And the manual settings.

To bad it`s 01:33 my place, so I`ll have to do the last tests tomorrow.

Thanks for the help, appreciate it 🙂

Update:

Did as you said. No change at all.

Now the strange part.

I downloaded the newest CPU-Z and installed it. And behold, it reports the full amount of 16Gb of RAM. But it is still just showing 12Gb in the BIOS...

Pictures from how it looks like:

Also now I get the info on all slots.

And here is what my BIOS looks like
