Laptop not performing as well in games as it should!?

I've recently purchased a ASUS N73-SV, and the laptop has been functioning well in all its aspects.
All but one - The gaming on this laptop isn't running as smoothly as it should, other laptops with lesser graphics cards and similar specs run the games much faster and smoother than I am able to.
The 'Can You Run It' site says that my pc exceeds the recommended specifications for games such as Skyrim, however when i try running games such as Team Fortress 2, the games lags and the frames per second run quite low ..

I've fully updated my graphics card to the latest drivers.

    What can/should i do?

Are you running from battery or plugged in?
Is your notebook set to high-performance mode?
What settings do you use in Skyrim for example?
What res is the N73s display you purchased?
