G74Sx What are normal temperatures for idle and intense gaming?

So I am playing Battlefield 3 and I don't recall the temperature ever passing 118 degrees F. Today and yesterday, it is creeping up to 140-145. Is this normal temp for gaming? I'm not even sure what normal is, so that info would help too. Also, the hot air is coming from right side, so I believe everything is working correctly. Is my laptop running to hot or is this normal for a laptop to run this hot? It seems to be idling a little warmer than it has in the past too. I am not super tech savvy, and a complete noob compared to most of you guys, so any help is appreciated. Thanks

145F is about 63c. That is really good for playing battlefield 3. My g53sw get's about 82c and that is considered normal. You should be fine. My idle temps are about 45c or 113F. You shouldn't have to worry.

Also, I gave you my CPU temps. Is that what you are referring to?

Thanks for the help on this. My GPU temperature is all I was really paying attention to I guess. It was the one raising to 145 F/63 C. I am just looking at the nVidia gadget that is open. I just wanted to make sure that those temps I am seeing are normal for playing games on ultra settings. Is there any other info that would be more helpful?

Those temps are really nothing to worry about for the GPU. How long have you had the laptop? Have you cleaned out the dust from the vents? You can buy a can of compressed air and blow into the vents to get the dust off the heatsinks/fans

I get 55 C under load on my G53SX (which has the same albeit 128-bit GPU), so those temps should be nothing to worry about. If they climb to 80 C or higher, then I would get worried. Check for dust in the fans, that might be the cause. You are a noob...a very well-read noob, as your post indicates...all but answered your own question 🙂

I wish I got 55c under load. I've repasted and cleaned out all the dust on my g53sw.

In Linux I idle at around 33C while the G74 is in a standard ambient environment of 21C (70F). Windows always idles higher (37-40) since its always running so much more crap to keep itself stable. While running four cores at 100% in Linux my CPU gets to 66-68C.

How do you read the CPU temp in LINUX? I can get the GPU temp from nVidia drivers. Just curious.

I just type "sensors" at the command prompt to check it occasionally., which relies on the lm-sensors package being installed. If one wants real time monitoring of CPU/GPU/HDD/mainboard temps I would run gkrellm.

Ran a test of my G74 will all 8 threads yesterday being used in Linux. Ambient temp=26C, CPU temps never exceeded 70C.

ASUS ROG cooling rocks! I don't tend to push my system hard...except when running VMs. My VM of Win8 is faster than my work laptop (if WEI is to be believed)...speaks volumes about the performance of the machine.
