    Zka,
Keep a video camera on it just in case something spectacular happens.

Try it I have a couple of times. Boot into OS or BIOS with no Cooler on your CPU. The system just shuts down. It does not slow down, or throttle. It stops.

Your words are enough for me Sir! I saw this phenomena in older CPUs, even recently with my 980X... - but yes, those are not Sandy Bridge...

Thank you! This is the biggest thing here on the Forum... we learn something every day...

    It's time for an update...

Since my last update, I continued to play with the CPU's speed... well, it really seems that for 4 cores and HT enabled and for my air cooling setup, the frequency has a sweet spot around 5.4GHz... whatever I'm doing, won't boot into OS at higher frequencies... I've tried to tweak the BCLK too, but that stops at 102.5... - yeah, this is a Sandy Bridge...

The next step was the memory... I know, I have in this setup too high-speed memories - 2600MHz is known to be too much for a 2700k... but I wanted to see, what it can do...

Here I have to say that I owe special thank to 8 Pack for his help in memory tweaking!

Based on his suggestion, I reached 2186MHz at 9-11-10-25/2T timings... it would not do 1T (as the original suggestion was) whatever I did... Here is a Super Pi 32M and wPrime 32M result with these settings:

Then I did a MaxxMem running and realised that it gives me low hwbot score... so I started from begining... spent a lot of time with it, but finally I got to this: 2176MHz, 8-9-9-27 2T - combining this with the CPU speed at 5.1GHz (102.5x50) got a new personal record:

The next benchmark I wanted to do was wPrime 1024M... of course, tried the above settings, but it didn't resulted in too nice score... I knew that it needs more CPU speed, but the system became unstable at these memory timings if I tried to up the CPU... so, I loosened the memory timings to 9-9-9-27 2T and at the end I had to reduce the frequency too, at 2154MHz... - but this allowed me to go up with the CPU speed at 5.25GHz... and here is my new wPrime 1024M score:

Of course, I wanted to see if wPrime 32M got any better since my last trying... and it actually was worse... - so, again, I started it over... Since the wPrime 32M is much more temperature friendly with the CPU, I could push the frequency higher: 5.4GHz with memories at 2176MHz (9-9-9-27/2T)! Here is the result:

So, I think, I'm getting close to the limits of this setup... I believe that wPrimes could be better with better cooling, maybe a little faster memory... yeah, I know, Sandy Bridge won't go much higher than 2200MHz, but perhaps tighter timings would help... - will see!

As it can be seen on my wPrime results above, I'm hitting the upper limits of the Noctua NH-D14... wPrime 32M can go up to 5.4GHz (as it takes shorter time), but with wPrime 1024M is no way I can do that... and I'm just at 1.56V on Vcore... The Noctua's fans are at the max rpm, ambient temp varies between 22.5-23.5C.

My only option here, I feel, it's the watercooling... fortunately I have everything I may need

The radiator is a XSPC RX360, used previously for cooling some GTX480s (in pair with a same one)... pump is Swiftech MCP655 - with the variable speed... CPU block is a never used (not even remember why I got this one) EK Supreme HF... the reservoir is EK too... some tubing (it's 3/8"ID and 1/2"OD, but have no idea which brand)... oh, and I also have some barbs (not on the picture)... Oh, and my Cougars, of course!
