Pink screen! Hope it's not my GPU!

Hi friends, I had a very worring problem about my GTX460 using 296.10 in my G53JW. While i was watching a full screen Youtube video, and a song was being played on background, i suddenly had a kind of pitched PINK and green vertical bars, like pink screen of death. The computer was totally unresponsive till i reboot but interestingly the music was being played with no problem. I took some pics, and video. I'm sending the pics to you, hope you lead me to a easy fix and hope it's not hardware. That happened me second time. I played F1 2011 at high settings about 2 hours and had NO problems. Maybe flash or DWM has bugs with 296.10 resulting vibrating pink/green bars? I was watching that video when the problem have appeared:

Hope you see my pics mate!

Please look up the screenshots, i also have VGA video in WMV format that is recorded when the problem has appeared. I can upload it for further investigation. My temps are fine, GPU didn't exceed 80 and played F1 2011 fluently. I never EVER HAD such issue in 285.62 or stock 259.34.

Your comments and suggestions are greatly appreciated 😞

If you connect it to an external monitor, does the problem also appear on the external display?

Unfornutely, i have no FULL HD or capable LCD monitor right now, around me. Anyway, the screen is completely unresponsive with pink/purple bars which are pitched and i had this for second time since updated to 296.10!

It doesn't have to be full HD; anything will work to see if this is a GPU or display or some other problem.

Doesn't matter if it's a full HD monitor, it just needs to have an input that your laptop has an output for.

But if the issue just started happening when you updated to a new set of drivers, have you tried going back to the old version or the latest version for the 4xx series which is 301.42?

Thanks for your suggestion. I haven't updated to 301.42 WHQL yet and read some reports that the problem still exists with 301.42. Reverting to older driver is recognized as recommended action but i don't want to use outdated driver and i had video playback problems with 285.62 but NEVER such pink/purple screen with it.

Is it a known issue? Did you get something from screenshots? I don't want to break my gaming rig just for such a silly problem!

"Pink screen" is a known issue on the 296.10 and 296.16 versions.
I've had that pink screen on both of them, particularly while watching
videos via a USB thumbdrive.

I suggest you update to the 301.42 WHQL driver or higher.
The 301.42 and, now, the 304.48 BETA, seem to be working well on my G74.

Well, the way I look at it, what you have now isn't working... So what do you have to lose by trying a more recent version of the drivers? Worst case scenario you're pretty much right where you are now, but there's at least a possibility that it will resolve your issue.

Thanks guys, all i'll have to try 301.42 latest WHQL but not sure if it'll be a remedy.

@PILGRIM
Were your symptoms identical to mine that're included as screenshots in my first post? Hey, look, i also published a Youtube video and the pitched pattern was also intermittently vibrating with pink/purple bars:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wBUNDTir9xQ&feature=youtu.be

Is it because of faulty 296.10? Note that it happens very RARELY but it completely pisses me of which is a very annoying problem thati HAVEN'T had on my other computers though they have older Nvidia cards!

Hope you see my screenshots and video and relax me if it's just a driver problem....

Cheers all!

Yes, our "pink screen" experiences are identical- but the triggers are different.
I've had that pink screen when I loaded a video clip in a USB thumbdrive.
I also had to force-restart the G74 to make it go away. It happened on two occasions.
Once was when I had the 296.10 version, and the other was when I had the 296.16 version.

The 301.42 WHQL has been the solution for this issue- at least for me. It has been stable
up until I decided to try the 304.48 BETA a few weeks ago. Though I'm not really a fan of
BETA releases, the 304.48 BETA has also been good, so far.

kimiraikkonen, take a deep breath.. relax.. and try that 301.42 WHQL..
It could be the solution. If it's not, there are other stable nVidia drivers to fall back to.. 🙂
