Crosshair V Formula-Z + FX-8150/8350 CPU -- Memory Type and Configuration

I will be purchasing a Crosshair V Formula-Z Motherboard along with an FX-8150 (maybe, depending on your advice!)

I would really like to have the AMD FX-8350, however not sure when this CPU will be out, I have heard Oct. 17th but not sure if that is right or not.

I really can't wait, but I will if it’s a better buy! Would it be best to wait and purchase Crosshair V Formula-Z Motherboard and the AMD FX-8350 CPU, or should I forget about the FX-8350 and go ahead and just buy the FX-8150 CPU now?

Please let me know if it’s worth the wait or if I should buy now. (This all depends on the wait also, if its later then Oct, 17th I’ll probably buy now)

As for the Memory Type and Configuration I am stuck on the following:

G.SKILL Ripjaws Z Series 32GB (4 x 8GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 2133 (PC3 17000) Desktop Memory Model F3-2133C9Q-32GZH

Yes, I know I would ever use 32GB of RAM but, I will be using VMware WorkStation sometimes to learn a new OS to become certified!

What I’m really looking for is Stable Memory with great timings and speed that will go great with Gaming/Day to Day Applications, VMware, sometimes video editing, and web designing.

Also a couple of concerns I have read about is, the AMD FX-8150/8350 doesn’t support anything higher then DDR3-1866 (is this true, will the 2133 RAM be downgraded to 1866/1800?)

Another concern I had was the Asus Crosshair V Formula-Z Motherboard didn’t support DDR3-1866 and it’s not listed on the specifications page on Newegg or Asus Website, however it’s listed on the Memory Compatibility Chart from Asus for this MB! So does it support 1866 or not?

Please let me know what your thoughts and concerns are about different Memory Types and Configuration I have chosen and if you could please help me decide on what CPU to go with!

Welcome to ROG camorgan21 ..
Well .. how can we know what is better if the 8350 is not out ? We are All 'supposeing' it is.
As to waiting .. et ... if it is 'better', how much better ?? If you can stand the suspense wait.

As to Ram .. same problem .. who knows. 1866 ? It supports up to 2133 correct ?
"4 x DIMM, Max. 32GB, DDR3 2133(O.C.)/1866/1600/1333/1066 MHz ECC, Non-ECC, Un-buffered Memory" from Asus.

As to brand .. to each his own .. for me .. Corsair Dominator Gt and I can tell you from personal experience that
it run great with 8150. (although each cpu is a little different than the next...)
Dominator Platinum is their new .. 'high end' ram ... i expect the same or better from that.

You do not mention intended GPU .. on a bright note, if you wait, the 7990 may also be available by then ???
know one knows for sure .. well .. someone knows .. but the 'aint' tell'n.c.

Well the DDR3-1866 isn't supported according to the New Asus "Crosshair V Formula-Z" Motherboard Specifications, however looking at the "Crosshair_v_formula-z-memory-QVL" compatibility chart; the DDR3-1866 is listed. So which is correct? Does this Motherboard support it or not?

Crosshair V Formula-Z Supports the following (Per the Specifications off ASUS Website):

4 x DIMM, Max. 32GB, DDR3 2400(O.C.)/2133(O.C.)/2000(O.C.)/1800(O.C.)/1600/1333/1066 MHz ECC, Non-ECC, Un-buffered Memory

Crosshair V Formula supports the following (Per the Specifications off ASUS Website):

4 x DIMM, Max. 32GB, DDR3 2133(O.C.)/1866/1600/1333/1066 MHz ECC, Non-ECC, Un-buffered Memory
Dual Channel Memory Architecture

As for choosing AMD FX-8150 or FX-8350 yes I know there isn't anything on it however rumor has it it's 10% better then 8150. I wasn't sure if anyone had any other thoughts about this upcoming CPU if it’s worth the wait or not.

I cant even begin to imagine how it doesnt support it .. if it supports those around it. all OC'd ??? very curious.
Then .. 2133 ???
Unless it is a misprint .. 1800 ??? who has even heard of using it ??? I simply dont believe it.
Hopefully we will get an Official response after the weekend ends .. back to work .. first thing in the A.M....
which is about 3AM e.s.t. ..... and yes, 32GB is Serious Over-Kill ... but .. you will certainly be prepared for
anything ... keeping my eyes open for the 'Official Answer'....c.

I'll be keeping my eye open also, waiting for the Official Answer!

Also to note, the AMD FX-8150 according to AMD's Website and to Newegg's site

"The AMD FX Processor features a high-bandwidth, low-latency integrated memory controller that supports up to DDR3-1866..."

Doesn't that mean this CPU will downgrade DDR3-2133 to the supported DDR3 for this CPU, such as 1866 or lower?

Not only am I looking for an answer for these questions, but could someone also review my first response as to what type of memory to purchase!

Is there a Major difference say in CL 8 vs CL 9?

- For Example will the lower CL make a difference when it comes to Gaming/Normal Application/Boot Time/Starting a Program or Game and running multiple things in the background while playing a game such as music?

Is there any known issues running Memory at 1.6/1.65V or is it best to say with 1.5V and lower if you can?

- Rumor has it the higher the voltage rating is, the hotter the memory gets and the shorter the lifespan is or at least it doesn't last as long over time. I was just also wondering if this is true or not!

Thanks

Cody

All memory higher than the Chipset specification is supported via OC. What that means is if your CPU can do the frequency that your ram is rated for then all good.

Memory controller is located on the CPU so the motherboard has very little to do with actual determination of memory frequency, beyond providing the interface between the slot and the IMC (on the CPU)
To help us help you - please provide as much information about your system and the problem as possible.

How do I know if the AMD FX-8150 supports the DDR3-2133 CL 9 1.6V Memory? I know the MB will support this sped just fine, but to go along with what you said I would need to verify the CPU supports that speed!

The AMD processor will run that frequency, the question you should be asking are you able to clock the CPU to run that ram frequency.

LOL not as zen as it may sound. The AMD bulldozer range of CPU's clock ram really well. I have clocked to over 2800MHz with a 8150 before.

New member here, just completed upgrading my system to include the CHVF-Z and the G.SKILL Ripsaws X 32Gb (4x8GB) in combination with an 1100T. Even though the memory wasn't listed on the QVL, it works fine. In fact I was shocked to see the memory worked in the Asrock M3A790GXH 128, which was listed as only supporting 16GB ram and the main reason why I upgraded my motherboard (along with more SATA ports and inclusion of USB 3.0). When I was shopping around I saw that my local Tiger Direct had the 8150 BE boxed with the water cooler,.. I was very very tempted had I not just recently gotten an H100.

I've been a big fan of Asus products since the produced one of the very 1st publicly available AMD Slot A (K7M)motherboards (although it came with no packaging that mentioned Asus) and the exceptional A7N8X-E Deluxe. All in all, I can say I've never had a bad experience with Asus products in the 13+ years of using their products (well them and Abit -RIP), in fact I believe until just recently the A7N8X and A7V were fully functioning as a personal webserver and a media server.

Whoops sorry for the OT derailment.. as far as th OP, I recommend the GSkills for the Z, works flawlessly with the 508 BIOS.

HA my first board was an asus A7v with a 1 GHZ AMD T-bird that i OC'd to 1300 MHZ, my a7n8x-e ran solid uptill about 2 years ago with my Athlon XP 3200. used that system for 7 years lol, damn I miss my BFG 6800 Ultra, it was a sad day when it died. also used an ATI all in wonder 128, Asus Geforce 3 TI 500, and also had an Asus Geforce 5950 Ultra.

And i can vouche for 2133 on the CHV with no problems, tho I'm only using 2x4GB
