So, Hard Drive Capacity...

Looking on the Asus Website, it says up to 1tb, i know we have 2 bays, 1tb each?

is there a BIOS update that allows for larger hdd size? or is it possible to partition the larger HDD?

i was thinking a 256gb SSD and a 2tb standard secondary drive.

Generally, these laptops will come with (for the 1tb) 2 500GB hard drives, but depending on where you get it from and what merchant, you can customize the storage to best suit your needs. If you're wanting to put in a SSD and have a 2tb secondary drive, your best bet would be to try and get it with 1 500gb hard drive, since that will probably be the cheapest. And of course you'd have to buy the SSD, and then for the 2tb drive you'd have to buy that separately as well. Windows will recognize up to 2TB I think as a single drive formatted as NTFS. For myself, I purchased a G74 with a 750GB hard drive, and then purchased my 64GB SSD off of newegg and it's running perfectly fine

i already have the system, just looking to upgrade,

i was worried about the bios not recognizing the larger drive.

It should recognize it, I have a 3TB drive I put in my Desktop and it wouldn't recognize all of it until I formatted it a different way. But by default Windows 7 will see up to 2TB, so it shouldn't be an issue

The recognition issues occur when you pass th 2 TB (BIOS) mark. UEFI is required to support larger HDDs than that. Two 1 TB HDD are accessed independently, so they will not be an issue...if you have the space. Make sure to get the 9.5 mm variants!

This is a good thread...I have wondered about whether the G74 would work with 2x1TB HDDs or not...in fact, as soon as any 1TB 7200rpm HDDs in the small form factor hit the market I intend to find out andreplace my 2x500GB 7200 drives in there. Don't really want the slower 5400's either...

Should be fine, I doubt they will come out for a while though, considering that HDD sizes have almost stagnated. I guess the next jump will be when HAMR (heat-assisted magnetic recording) becomes the norm.

you said 2tb mark, so a 256GB ssd and a 2TB hdd wouldnt work?

Edit i guess they dont make a 9.5mm tall 2TB hdd, its a 15mm, so physical size is the limitation.

2TB if it fits will work. The G75 has the ability to do EFI booting, so you could go to some astronomically large capacity and it would boot. If you switch to EFI mode, you will have to reinstall Windows, but I would assume you are going to anyway.

Sorry, I meant 2TB per single drive. So having the 256gb ssd and the 2tb drive would work without any special preparation
