Strange issue after Overclocking.

Hi,

I have a strange issue I hope someone can help with. I have a new PC with the ASUS P9X79 motherboard, full specs below. I overclocked to 4400. No issues under normal load. When gaming, browsing web etc, temps 55 -60, CPU load 20% max. If I stress test with Prime95 or Linx Real Temp gets to about 75 - 80 degrees and then throttles down. So it will have 100 x 44 get to say 80 degrees and throttle back down to 100 x 32 and then the temps fluctuate between 60 - 80

I followed this guide http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature...&v=Kx2z07sFM2I, everything is set the same except it is 4400 and not 4800 and the CPU VCORE Voltage is set to offset .120. If I try set higher the text changes to yellow the red.

Hi Dave! The problem is the PCH heatsink is getting too hot. I just encountered this last week when I took that same board up to 5.0ghz stable 24/7. It started throttling like you said except my temps were better than yours. I think I was about 74c tops. I put a fan over that PCH bridge and all was well, no more throttling. Give it a try. put your finger near the heat sink when running prime and see it it is hot, u should be able to feel the warmth. I touched mine and it almost burned me. so take caution. I am 99% sure this is your problem because I build 2 5.0ghz servers in the last 2 weeks and both had the P9X79 mobo and both same issue. I took a 92mm fan and pointed at the heatsink and all better no more issues. Give a try! hope this helps.

Thanks for the reply. I'm not sure where that heatsink is but I will google it and see. Maybe it will show it in the manual. Should the FAN be pushing air over it or sucking heat away? That's another thing I'm never sure about, I have the top two fans sucking air and the side and front fans blowing air.

That heatsink is just above the cpu. and I would blow air directly on it.

and your fan layout is good air in from front and exhausting to top and rear.

Hi I attached a pic. I flipped the top two fans so they are blowing down, I marked these with red arrows. Is the green highlighted section the heatsink you mentioned?

The yellow arrows are for the two fans at the front of the PC, they are behind the HDDs.

Then the side of teh case that I have off now have two FANs attached that in blowing air in.

The water cooler is there as you can see and that feels like air is blowing out of the PC.

After the change of the top FANS the issue is still there. I can't see where I could mount any other fans.

Antec spot cooling fan could be the solution, you get air blown directly at the hot element.

Thanks again, I will look into getting that. There have been some bad reviews about it not staying in place but it does look like the best option. Do you think it will be safe to leave it at 4400MHz at the moment, it doesn't over heat from daily use, max temp around 60 -65

Also do you think I should flip those top fans back around?

I´d just leave it, and not use any demanding applications.
I would however return the fan config the way they were before. I think the airflow will not run properly, your water cooler fans may draw excessively on the available cool air, and cheat out the rest of the case or perhaps even cheat out your spot fan, or it will simply disrupt the airflow. Call me old fashioned, I want the air intake at the front and out the back.

Tenblade is right I would turn the fans back around. If u have a fan laying around just ziptie it in there just to see if it fixes the issue. over the heatsink that u marked green.
