Help with Windows 8 transfer on G75

Ok, Bestbuy no longer has the G75VW-BBK5 model that is all over these forums (this one comes with windows 7)

They now only carry the G75VW-BHI7N07 model (this one comes with windows 😎

both come with a 1TB 5400 rpm drive which is no good for me other than data storage, so I'm going to get the Seagate Momentus XT Hybrid SSD HDD 750GB to replace it. My choices were between the hybrid drive and the intel 520 120gb (both are same in price) 120gb being too small, I figured the hybrid would give me capacity while still speeding things up.

I've been searching these forums and it seems very simple to transfer the OS....if it's windows 7....but I find nothing but horror when it comes to windows 8 OS transfers.

My last hope is to pay Bestbuy's Geek Squad to do the swap, but I'm guessing that's going to be fairly expensive, so if anyone can shed some light on this for me, maybe I'll take on this project myself??

The machine has space for two internal drives ... you should buy an SSD and put the operating system on it ... save the original 1 TB drive for data storage.

Just get a nice SSD ( like intel 520 180 gb maybe / samsung 830 or 840 ) ... pull out original drive ... do a fresh install of win 8 onto SSD drive while it is the only drive in the machine ... then put 1 TB drive back in after maybe scratching all the data on it.

you also going to ASUS estore to visit what HDD do you need to buy, http://us.estore.asus.com/
upgrade Win8 SOP, you are able to visit ROG forums or ASUS service center.

Thanks John_from_Ohio, that's exactly what I plan to do. OS on the SSD or the hybrid and use the 1TB for data storage, but I still have a problem:

ok, to clarify:

I need help on the steps to transfer the pre-installed windows 8 from the existing 1TB HDD to a new SSD or Hybrid HDD, which ever I decide to buy. The problem being windows 8 is pre-installed on the laptop and will probably not come with recovery disks or the original windows 8 disks.

I'm familiar with replacing an existing hard drive with a new one and then doing a fresh install of the OS onto the new drive....but I can't do that if the laptop doesn't come with Windows 8 DVDs or a recovery disk, since apparently windows 8 does not have a recovery feature like windows 7 does.

So how do I get the OS that is currently on the 1TB drive, transfered onto the new SSD or Hybrid drive?

Does anyone know how to do this?

Looks like you got a bunch of reasonable answers that all may work ...

You REALLY want to pick an SSD not a hybrid for the OS portion. The hybrids are "not bad" but a new SSD is much faster on a day by day basis.

Once you are running / booting a modern system from an SSD ... you won't ever look back on the prehistoric days!

Does the recovery image on a HDD work for installing a OS on an SSD?

i'm not sure but can you download the windows 8 upgrade tool, use your product key to download windows 8 ISO? with that you can create a WIndows DVD or USB and do a fresh install.

I would make an Image or clone the drive using Macrium Reflect.

http://www.macrium.com/reflectfree.aspx
To download the free version, just scroll down to the bottom of the page click on the download button.

Make an image of the 1TB HDD, then just re-image it to the new SSD or clone the 1TB HDD to the new SSD.

cosmicmango, did you use macrium reflect free version for the disk cloning process described and the new clone disk actually booted ok?

many claimed the cloning is 'good' but the real problem is to get the clone disk to boot nicely.

I've used it to clone a new G75VW with Windows 8 I got a couple of weeks ago with a Intel 520 180GB SSD and didn't have any problems.
