I just ordered a new Sabertooth Z77 to replace my Asus GENE V. However i was wondering if i would have to reinstall Windows 8? I assume that since the chipset and the processor will be the same then i shouldnt need to. Although im not 100 percent sure.

The Sabertooth is an awesome board. A new board merits a new beginning. Backup your data and do a fresh W8 installation. 😉

The answer kind of depends on the circumstances.

It can be done to migrate boards, but it takes some work and you MUST have a retail copy of Win 8. I forget the specifics, so you'll have to do a little googling of your own, but you want to trigger an OOBE (Out of Box Experience) setting where it wipes out all the user installed drivers using the placeholder drivers that come with Windows. Then you have to reinstall drivers again when you're done, so a lot of times it's quicker and easier to just reinstall.

You need a retail copy of Windows because OEM copies do not have transfer rights. Once they are activated, that's the hardware they are tied to. Change the motherboard, and you'll trigger an activation event, which will fail.

Scott. Microsoft change the EULA with Windows 8 , the OEM sell by retaillers is now call System Builder and you can transfer it , here part of the EULA for the system builder

"You may transfer the software to another computer that belongs to you. You may also transfer the software (together with the license) to a computer owned by someone else if a) you are the first licensed user of the software and b) the new user agrees to the terms of this agreement. To make that transfer, you must transfer the original media, the certificate of authenticity, the product key and the proof of purchase directly to that other person, without retaining any copies of the software. You may use the backup copy we allow you to make or the media that the software came on to transfer the software. Anytime you transfer the software to a new computer, you must remove the software from the prior computer. You may not transfer the software to share licenses between computers. You may transfer Get Genuine Windows software, Pro Pack or Media Center Pack software only together with the licensed computer."
