So far I have been unable to install Ubuntu on this. I cannot even get the BIOS to recognise any external devices, including the internal SD card. This may well be a frustrated user problem... 😞

( However the notebook rocks! I am really impressed. Mine has an i7-3840, 8Gb RAM, and an msata Crucial m4 256Gb SSD in it. Xonotic in ultra gfx mode with all extra gfx options enabled gives me a steady 750fps)
G46VW - Intel Core i7-3840QM @ 2.8 GHz, NVIDIA GeForce GTX 660m 2GB, Crucial m4 256Gb mSATA SSD, 500 Gb Seagate Momemtus Hybrid HDD, 8 GB RAM, 14" 1366x768/720p screen resolution, Intel Centrino Wireless-N 2230 2x2 MIMO.

Try using the Wubi installer, you just run it, select the Linux OS, wait, and its done. That is what I used in my g75/g73jh and it works great. Maybe that will work for you?

Make sure that Secure Boot is disabled, along with Launch CSM. Or you could try Wubi. I have never used that, so I can't say how well it works. I use OpenSUSE, which is another distro to consider if you are willing to put in a little more work.
I am disturbed because I cannot break my system...found out there were others trying to cope! We have a support group on here, if your system will not break, please join!

We now have 178 people whose systems will not break! Yippee! 🙂

Wubi it's a good idea! Before making any purchase i think i will make a live cd test like an ubuntu or knoppix distro. But it's quite hard to find a laptop to test it ;). It doesn't matter i'm not in hurry. I'm waiting in a first time for any optimus linux good news... I'm just waiting since 2010...

Might I suggest doing a live USB, since the G46 doesn't have a CD/DVD drive, not to mention the boot times are better (and the noise is lower).

I have read that:

Actually, I am glad that ASUS chose not to for a different reason: LINUX. LINUX has a hard time supporting custom hardware, and every Optimus hardware is slightly different. By choosing a standard dedicated GPU configuration, ASUS eliminated the LINUX issues as well as made it possible for ROG users to run the nVidia reference drivers.

Is it true for the G46VW
If it's true, it would be quite better for a linux install 😛
(like i understand i'm not english native)

The G46VW uses Optimus - switchable graphics. You can try installing, but you are likely to have the Intel card running. There is work going on to get Optimus working on LINUX, hoping it finishes! 🙂

There is no interest to buy a video card you can not use;)
There are lot of laptops with only a HD4000 and there are a little bit less expansive!
So i wait 😄
