You can use the motherboard box as a testbench. For testing use Heaven Benchmark or 3D mark vantage

Ready to order, would you mind looking over everything to insure I have it all covered. Hate to get it here and something not work because I didn’t cross a T or dot an I.

    ASUS Maximus V EXTREME
Intel Core i7-3770K Ivy Bridge 3.5GHz
CORSAIR Dominator Platinum 16GB 1866 Ram (confirmed in compatibility list)
Crucial M4 mSATA 256GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (operating system)
Crucial M4 2.5" 256GB SATA III MLC 7mm Internal Solid State Drive (data and recovery partition)
Microsoft Windows 8 Professional 64-bit (Full Version) - OEM ( hope I don’t regret this)
Two ASUS GTX680-DC2-4GD5 GeForce GTX 680 4GB Graphics cards.
    CORSAIR AX1200i modular power supply
ASUS Xonar Phoebus ROG Gaming Soundcard

When I install the graphics cards I will need to install them in slots 1 and 2b giving me 8 x 8 native. Will that configuration steal from the sound card or vice versa?
Do I need a PS/2 keyboard to access the OC key, I am not sure if a USB board with a PS/2 adapter will work? Atm the keyboard I am using is the Cooler Master CM Storm Quick Fire Pro and have no complaints.

Follow the MVE manual to know in which lane you're going to place the GPU. The 3770k has 16 lanes but the MVE also comes with a PLX chip which doubles the number of lanes to 32. So running it in x8 x8 and with a sound card won't be a problem. Also x8 PCI-e 3.0 and x16 PCI-e 3.0 performs about the same (difference being around 0.1 FPS which is within the margin of error when counting). Here is a benchmark showing this, though with the 7970 http://www.anandtech.com/show/5458/t...cking-and-msaa

The OC key requires a PS/2 keyboard, I don't know if it works with an adapter. Also a normal PS/2 keyboard goes for like 10$ and with the only use being with the OC key a high end won't be needed. I don't use mine as I don't have a PS/2 keyboard and overclocking in BIOS works fine anyways for me.

Looking at your signature I will assume that is your current build, if so, you just became my go to guy. Don’t worry I will not abuse our relationship LOL.

I have downloaded the MVE manual but I do not see an option to boot from external USB 2.0 drive. I am sure it is possible however. Also, of all the different ways to update bios, what is the best?

Either put it on a fat 32 USB stick and select to update in the BIOS or use BIOS flashback. What I know you should be able to boot from a USB drive, this option will appear in the BIOS when selecting boot priority. Haven't tried external boot though.

Judging by this thread, it is forecasted to be released late Feb (US) and later in the EU.

last minute question before I order...

While I game often I also do some 3D rendering and have read that it works better with an OpenCL card. So again I am in a pinch, what card do I want for both gaming and 3d rendering.

I am leaning toward the GTX 680 4gb but I have noticed the SAPPHIRE Radeon HD 7970 3GB could be a close contestant.

Will I notice the difference between them?
What is best and can you help me understand why?

The 7970 seems to beat the 680 in 3d rendering while the 680 is best when gaming. Read here for some more into this : http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/forum/...zbrush-effects
As for the connection between the ram and 3d rendering I'm not so sure. But it seems to apply to the same type as for gaming, if you're making super high res 3d models the ram will be used more, which is why the 3gb 7970 is better as it's cheaper. As they said in the thread the 7970 is better for all around performance while the 680 is better when gaming, there is quite a difference in some games and certain games uses Nvidia Physx which adds effects to the game.

Depending on your choice I would recommend either the 7970 ghz edition (a newer version of the 7970) or a 4gb 680. The price difference between the 7970 ghz edition and the 680 4gb is around 100$ depending on model.

I have http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814121705 and http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814202005 sitting in my cart waiting to decide. It appears, if my english is up to par, that you are telling me it is about a toss up between them. If i want better gaming then ASUS, if i want faster renders with less lock up then SAPPHIRE. But either will do the job. Right?

er. read the thread you noted. Driver issues on the 7970? that cannot be good.
