G55 Question - Can you restore to factory settings using the F9 menus?
Or do you HAVE to use burned CDs through the recovery tool?

The F9 "should" work just fine to restore to factory unless you have deleted/removed the recovery partition.
Having a set of recovery disks ( not possible yet for asus with Win 8 I guess since recovery utility is awol ) does the same thing without requiring a viable recovery partition still on the hard drive.

My 500GB hdd is split into 2 250GB partitions for some reason. Any idea where the recovery information is stored? Is it accessible through windows?

I'm actually kind of working on cleaning up some documentation in preparation for a sticky post on something like this. Not sure if I'll get to it this week, but keep an eye out.
Anyway, as I understand it, the built-in Windows recovery system should pick up things on the recovery partition and integrate that all in.
