In a simple way: Extreme is for overclocking, Formula is for gaming - which one do you want to do?

Both actually. Perhaps I will wait a month or so and see what develops. Still waiting for my Corsair 900D which I should get in 2-3 weeks hopefully. If nothing is coming in the near future then I would consider the Formula (assuming its available still). It looks like it can overclock but not to the extent of the RIVE, correct? Any ROG board can be OC'd! Even the non-ROG ones too... So, no worries with the Formula either... - double-check the features though... with the formula you won't need a 8 piece RAM kit...

I can tell you my P9X79 WS OC like any of my ROG boards. They are now out of stock at Egg. usually when distributors run out of stock , Asus release a new model not too long after, when the IVY-E is due ? Originally Posted by Zka17

Sometime around October, I believe. Anyway, I'm pretty sure the RIVE can handle IVY-E with only a bios update. I don't think that would be the trigger for a new product cycle. Also, IVY-E is expected to be the end of the line for X79, so I doubt ASUS would invest any more product development money in a chipset that is about to EOL. It is rather odd though to EOL their prestige X79 mb right before the release of the last compatible CPU for that platform, with nothing to cover that space. Originally Posted by Area 66
