3D Gaming - what is your experience?

I am interested in 3D gaming - haven't tried it so I don't have anything to compare. I don't want to shell out the $ and be underwhelmed.

Looking for input from those of you who have experience with it. What are the different hardware requirements / setups and if it is all worth the effort?

Or are we still a few years away from the software & hardware being balanced?

You're not gonna be able to run 3D on that video card. I had the Asus VG236 and with my older X58 build aka my backup pc, I would usually run about 60 fps when playing TF2 in 3D. That's alot lower then my usual 200+ fps when running at 120 hz in 2D mode. To be honest, I wasn't too impress with the 3D and the huge performance hit by it. I did like how Starcraft 2 looked in 3D. I can't remeber the fps but it ran without any issues. I have since switched back to IPS as I don't like how the monitor is darker on the bottom half.

If you really are that interested in 3D, expect the fps to drop in half and I would recommend at least a 670 GTX. Since I wasn't really impress with 3D, I usually just played in 2D mode and enjoyed the 120 Hz as most of my games were very smooth.

Oh, I know my current card is at the low end - so the plan is for a major upgrade. I just want to figure out if the extra $ for the 3D capable hardware is worth it. With the Titan release, I am hoping that the 670 or even the 680 has a little price drop.

red454 I run a 3d setup, it kinda gets old after awhile. Only problem is games that were not made with using 3d in mind. If I were you, wait for this setup. It will make 3d glasses for gaming irreverent this year

+1

I have a 3D surround setup and I rarely ever use it for 3D, just surround. Games with text items (like nameplates in multiplayer games) will often appear to have text all in the same plane right up close but the object assigned to the text is detached and deeper in the render. It's kind of annoying. Also when you enable 3D the monitor locks out all of the adjustments and only gives you a narrow amount of "light boost" adjustment. With my setup that adjustment seems to consist of "dark" and "darker".

Don't get me wrong, it's nice to have and play with sometimes but I can't say 3D has ever wowed me. My recommendation to people is to have the setup if it doesn't cost you too much extra but don't compromise your other build requirements to do it.

I´ve had nVidia 3D vision since half a year after its release and I have come across more trouble than good. The experience is really not that nice in most games, but I liked to look at the start screen of warcraft 3 but really it isn´t worth it and as mentioned by sectionate most games weren´t made with 3D in mind and I have seen a lot of problems with it and rarely use it. The newer version is probably better and the newer drives have fixed a lot of bugs but I don´t really feel that it is worth it as it is more or less only taking space on the desk for me.

Thanks everyone - that really sums it up. I wondered why I didn't see more (on forums) about how great 3D gaming is. Sounds like we may be a few years away from it all coming together. And perhaps the VR headsets will be the way to go... The developer kit for the Oculus is $300, and might be fun to work on and develop - if I had the time.

If you already have a nvidia gpu and do end up getting 1 monitor. You could buy one that wil work with nvidia 3d. After that the 3d kit is just 80 bucks. Only reason I purchased the glasses to begin with

@sectionate - That is the way I would go - nVidia. My GTS250 is too far on the low end to try now.

@n113 - my IT guy at work was telling me that some people get headaches and nausea from the 3D.
