I have a 7970 Matrix Platinum - Can I crossfire with a *different* model

Hey all,
Never got into crossfire so really not sure about this one. It's not an immediate but i figured down the line when 7970's get cheaper it will be a good cheap way to boost my performance by getting another 7970 GHZ.

However, with crossfire do the cards need to be *EXACTLY* the same? Considering this was a limited edition model i probably won't find it in the 12months or so down the track when I'll want to try this.

If I get another ASUS 7970 (whatever is around at the time) will it work?

Just curious really at this stage.

Thanks!

Save you the hassle of going to another thread.

Yes of course you can. AMD is not like nVid where you need the same card with the same memory size.
To help us help you - please provide as much information about your system and the problem as possible.

Thanks on my way for Matrix hunting! It's a no Brainer that the Matrix must be the primary card right, That way "Zero Core" will leave the Noisy reference HD 7970 card off until it's needed?

No problems to do that, you can even crossfire different cards (7970 + 7870 for example)

I'm cross firing an Asus 6870 Direct CU with a Sapphire 6870 Flex at the moment with no problems at all 😉

AWESOME!

I'm really happy with my Matrix Platinum but Crysis3 gave it a serious workout and this makes me very happy with the prospect of getting another 7970 down the track to boost performance!

Thanks guys!

If you can of course find another matrix for sale. Sucks that the USA seems to have done away with them, or can't get them in stock...
While in EU, their top sellers have 10+ in stock..

Another question. What kind of PSU do you think I'd need for a 7970 Crossfire that includes the Matrix?

I'm running an SSD, and I'm overclocked to 4Ghz (i7 2600k @3.4). Current PSU is 850W. Reckon I'll need to upgrade that too if I get another card?

That depends on the other card... here is a PSU calculator to give you an idea: http://www.extreme.outervision.com/psucalculatorlite.jsp
