UEFI Fastboot Windows 8

Folks,

been hovering here awhile chiming in when appropriate. Now I find myself in need of help. With MVE being Windows 8 certified, I expected that Fastboot would work out of the box. Of course ASUS does not provide the necessary instructions in its manual to quantify the requirements of such a system. It is only through forums like ROG can one find answers from really nice folks like yourself.

Here's my issue.

Bought a UEFI GOP Powercoler 7870LE Myst card to replace the HD 6970 that was not UEFI Fast boot compliant. Make a UEFI Windows 8 Pro X64 USB drive, and switched off CSM and enabled Fastboot.

During the install process was greeted with no available hard drives so F6'ed the Intel RST drivers which showed installing. At that point the machine gives a Machine Check Exception Bluescreen or just locks up.

If I install with CSM enabled, I can install without issue. However when I change back to CSM off, my machine spins for about 30 seconds and then produces that same Machine Check Exception.

I have tried this on so many different bios'es. 701, 1309, 1408, 1501, and the dreaded 1604.

I have turned off the system and removed the battery for hours just to install drivers.

Just don't know where to go from here, and would really appreciate some advice.

Thanks

Have you set the appropriate boot and storage options in the CMS section of the BIOS to UEFI? Also ASUS is only going to guarantee Win8 fast boot working when using both ASUS motherboards and video cards.

Thanks for the reply. I was under the impression that Asus was NOT providing new UEFI GOP bioses due to compatibility issues with other motherboards. Is that not the case?

As for the settings I have tried CSM (Auto and Disabled), both hang on the Intel RAID. Enabling legacy on the boot section, works, but then Fastboot is not truly enabled. Since the RST OROM should be Windows 8 certified, I am at a loss.

you should run the latest BIOS (1604 currently) as it also updates OROM along with BIOS. also make sure the Intel MEI firmware is updated to latest available (8.1).

You will also need a GPU supporting UEFI boot mode as well, otherwise you will need CSM auto/enabled in BIOS to boot successfully. if UEFI BIOS is not installed on your GPU from factory, try checking for updates or contact vendor's customer service to see if they can provide you with an updated one.

after booting in UEFI mode to USB installer and completing installation in this mode, the BIOS should have Windows Boot option listed on top of particular SSD, HDD, RAID, etc.

Everything seems correct. CSM disabled, no notification messages from bios indicating any video driver issues. Secure boot enabled. It just doesn't like the raid coming off the Intel RST, which is embedded, and therefore should not be a problem.

Using 2 Crucial C300's in Raid 0. No clue whats going on.

Thanks for the reply

what bugs me a bit is that you had to install a driver in order to see RAID volume in installer ... perhaps it doesn't like that driver and this is why it BSOD's when booting from it?

Just to make sure. are you installing on existing RAID array volume or let the installer create a new one? the Partition layout must be GPT (not default MBR) for UEFI to work.

other than that, perhaps there is some issue with UEFI boot and RAID ...

bugs me as well. As I said can do a full UEFI install as long as CSM is Enabled. But once disabled, system will not fastboot, and will bsod or just lock up with a Machine Check Exception.

it would honestly suck if UEFI boot doesn't support RAID volumes 😞
I was planning to go RAID SSD in a few months, and of course I want UEFI boot as well, running it now off a single SSD and it's amazing ...

wish I had a matching SSD for RAID, so I could test it myself...

You have to understand the mechanics involved. You can NOT disable CSM if you have a boot device that depends on a legacy OROM. Period.
Does 1604 include a UEFI SATA Driver? If it does, with CSM disabled, you should be able to set and check RAID options from the UEFI Setup menu. If not, then CSM can not be turned off. Other than that, what Exception are you getting? Do you have a minidump I can see?

It does indeed! I can see options for both the Intel Network Card and the RAID (can create and modify raid volumes).

When I create a new raid from the UEFI Bios, it does not show up in the Windows 8 setup screen (no drives do).

As for a minidump. No minidump available, since nothing is written to the drive.

This is nuts. And I can't believe this isn't something that's been out there. Its possible that it could be a bad motherboard?
