No Video and/or Memory Tested OK! Message

Hi all,

The specs of my system are in my signature. I'm having an issue with the Crosshair-V Forumla Z Motherboard.

About 30% of the time when I boot everything works fine. The rest of the time I usually get no video (the fans won't even start on my 2 x ATi 7970s) and I have to either reset or power off and on again. The Q-Code displays FF when this happens which the manual says is for future error codes? Sometimes when this happens and the GPUs finally start and I get video, the POST reports that "Memory Tested OK!" and wants me to enter the BIOS to save the settings. I do so and the system boots normally.

I have tried a different PSU (1000W CoolerMaster) but have the same issue.

I've tried my old ATi 5850 and it powers up every time, but the fans run at 100% and I still get no video.

I have tried every motherboard BIOS from 1001 and up but all have the same issue.

I thought it may have been related to my memory when trying to run it at 2133Mhz (I manually set the speed, voltage and timings) so I reset the BIOS to defaults and left everything at stock.

The only thing I've had which seemed to work initially was putting the stock AMD CPU cooler on, which runs way too fast and is noisy and useless at cooling the CPU. However after a couple of days the issue returned.

The stock CPU cooler has a 4 pin connector whereas the Noctua only has 3 pins. I've set the CPU Fan to DC instead of DWM as the BIOS suggests but that didn't help either.

I'm thinking I'm probably missing something painfully obvious or I have another issue.

Has anyone seen or heard of this before?

Thanks.

The OP stated that the fan on the Noctua cooler is a 3 pin, doesn't a pwm setting in the bios require a 4 pin connector to function properly ?
chjones45> I suggest that you take sectionate's advice and load the 1302 bios, as soon as the bios has finished loading and the system has rebooted then shut the system down and remove power cord from the PSU and remove the battery then clear the cmos. After clearing the cmos then power the system back up and if it will post them go back into the bios and set everything to "system default" and see if everything seems to be golden again, if so then reset your bios settings and enjoy your system ! 🙂

Thanks guys/gals. I was running the 1302 BIOS previously, first thing I did when I built the system, but I'll follow what you suggest and upgrade and then pull the power and CMOS battery. Thanks for the tip. I'll give it a go and let you know.

Thanks again.

Well ... two weeks on and I'm still having the issue.

I have tried a replacement PSU but that hasn't changed anything.

I started having issues with my 2TB SATA where it would just drop out of Windows Explorer and Disk Manager. I ran chkdsk over it and also ran sfc /scannow but no issues were reported. The drive kept doing it so I ordered a new 3TB SATA drive, which I installed yesteday.

The system still has this issue.

I noticed that when the system has this issue that the Q-CODE LED is very slow when cycling through all the various phases of the startup process. If I power the system on I can usually tell the issue is occuring as the laser on my USB Mouse doesn't turn on. I check the Q-CODE and it is still cycling through codes, but very, very slowly. I left it for over an hour last weekend and it eventually got to code 99 and just sat there.

As soon as I hit the reset button the codes start cycling through very quickly, the fans on the GPUs start, and then I see the laser on the mouse turn on. As soon as I see those I know everything is ok.

I'm starting to wonder ... the memory I have is Corsair Vengeance 16GB Dual/Quad Channel DDR3 Memory Kit (4x4GB) CMZ16GX3M4A2133C9R. This is the memory I have: http://www.corsair.com/en/vengeance-16gb-dual-channel-ddr3-memory-kit-cmz16gx3m4a2133c9r.html.

I've checked the HCL for the Formula-Z and this exact model memory isn't listed. However, I'd have thought the Q-CODE would give me one of the memory error codes if it was the problem. But, the fact that when I have the issue I receive the "Memory Tested OK!" message in POST after I reset the system is making me think that maybe it is that memory.

What do you guys think?

I don't really want to have to purchase different RAM if I don't have to, but I'm not sure what else I can try.

Thanks,

Chris

Hi all,

Well its been two weeks and the problem still persists. I applied the 1302 BIOS and cleared the CMOS as suggested but that hasn't helped.

I have noticed that when this issue occurs the Q-CODE LED moves through the various codes during the startup sequence very, very slowly. I left it for over an hour on the weekend and it had eventually moved to Q-CODE 99. I can usually tell very quickly if the issue occurs because the laser on my mouse does not turn on, and the fans on my GPUs do not start.

As soon as I press the reset button the Q-CODE progresses very quickly through the various codes, the laser on the mouse turns on and the GPU fans start.

I've tried another power supply but that didn't change anything.

The issue only seems to occur if the computer has been turned off for an hour or more. If I am in Windows and restart then the system boots fine. If I shut it down, wait 10-20 seconds, then power it back on it boots fine. It's only when the system has been off for a longer period.

On the weekend I started having issues with my 2TB SATA drive, Windows Explorer would lock up when accessing the drive and it would disappear from Disk Manager. I purchased a replacement 3TB drive which I installed yesterday, I was hoping that possibly the drive was faulty and causing the POST issues, but this hasn't change anything. I've also tried different SATA cables but that made no difference.

The only other thing I can think of is the memory, particularly since when the issue occurs and I then reset the system is I get the "Memory Tested OK!" message in the POST and have to enter the BIOS and save the settings (even though everything was at default and I haven't changed anything).

The memory I have is the Corsair Vengeance 16GB Dual/Quad Channel DDR3 (4x4GB) - CMZ16GX3M4A2133C9R. This is the memory: http://www.corsair.com/en/vengeance-16gb-dual-channel-ddr3-memory-kit-cmz16gx3m4a2133c9r.html.

I have checked the HCL for the Forumla-Z and this exact model of memory is not listed. I would expect the Q-CODE would give me an error code related to the memory if it was an issue, but the "Memory Tested OK!" message each time is throwing me off.

I really don't want to have to purchase other RAM, but it's the only thing I can think of, to order memory that is on the HCL.

What do you guys think?

Thanks,

Chris

Well, I have tested 2 x 8GB Corsair Vengeance DIMMs from another known working system and the same issue is experienced.

I have lodged an RMA request with the reseller and will be shipping the motherboard back to them on Monday. Hopefully they can reproduce my issue.

I will update this post again when I hear back from them.
