Well, just tried that....good adrenalin rush! It started flashing and then could not access some areas or some such and the flash failed. The tool kit suggested restore.bat which I tried and no luck there either. The BIOS showed ME as NA and then on reboot it did the boot endlessly loop. So changed BIOS to second chip where I have 2003 and I flashed BIOS2 to BIOS 1 and all is well again.

Could it be what alyupb mentioned. Shame if it's true.....that did sound a nice simple way to rid of corruption etc.

Is biosrefl going to cut the mustard?

No biosrefl only flashes the BIOS region. The point of doing it this way is to overwrite all regions not just the BIOS region. (Regions are Descriptor, BIOS, ME, GBE and Platform but platform is not used in these boards). I was not aware of what CodeRush said, I'll talk to him to clarify but from what I just read, it's a lock in 3602.

Try this: Now that you have 2xxx on the chip, try following the procedure again. It should work. But don't use 3602 as bios.bin. Use 33-4xx.

EDIT: After further reading latest posts by CodeRush, I believe USB Flashback won't update the ME region on boards who already have corrupted ME region. Not sure why ASUS wants to lock Descriptor and ME regions. Probably to prevent people from using fpt to upgrade like this and messing up in the process (hence creating more support issues).

Hey Nodens, appreciate the help! It has worked.

I flashed 3301 and after powering off I have 8.1.10.1286

By the way the BIOS I tried to flash first was 3504 so maybe that's locked down too?

As far as I can see from CodeRush's posts up to 34xx is safe. Just in case keep a version lower than that in second chip for emergency corruption recovery procedure

I flashed using the same method, and it has worked for me also.

Thanks to you and Nodens for the info

I just want to note that for upgrading MEI from 7... upto 8... with FTK tool kit it's not necessary to use reflash.bat, it's enough to put the last stock ASUS BIOS file for your particular p9x79…, like 3602 for RIVE (it has ME 8… ), rename it to bios.bin and run merefl.bat
To upgrade Gbe from 1.3 to 1.5 for ASUS p9x79… you can use the same tool kit and use ANY stock ASUS bios (even not for p9x79…) with Gbe 1.5 (for example BIOS 1805 for P8Z77-V PRO), rename it to bios.bin and run gberefl.bat

Thanks nikolator, nodens and Arne. I want to perform this ME and Gbe update but being a complete novice with command prompt etc, I haven't had the courage to do it.

Is there a complete noddy's guide somewhere for this down to exactly what to type with some screenshots as I read coderush's post and a I am not familiar with a lot of it.

Going to flash 3301 bios now in preparation.

The point of using reflash.bat was to ensure that no part of the SPI Flash is corrupted and not to just update the ME region since there must be something corrupted if it's not updating on its own via USB Flashback and 3xxx version (either descriptor or me region.

I'm quoting myself here to state that the above is wrong. I just talked to CodeRush and the new lock is on the UEFI only. reflash.bat fails because it erases everything and then tries to flash the UEFI which fails rendering the board unbootable.

    This means:
That with new ASUS lock, Descriptor, ME, GBE can perfectly be flashed manually (if you want to ensure non-corruption) and then use USB Flashback to update BIOS Region or you can just do what I already suggested, usb flashback to older version and use reflash.bat with a a 33xx or 34xx to ensure that you have no corruption and then flash whatever version you want via flashback. If you want to update ME or GBE after that, it can be done with FTK with no issue, per region.
