New HDD

I am planning on getting a 500 gig 6.0 Gb/s HDD, at the moment I have a 500 gig 3.0Gb/s HDD as my C drive with everything on it, operating system, photography software, and games. I also have a 160 gig 3.0 Gb/s HDD as my D drive which I use as a storage drive just for drivers and programmes like nvidia drivers and benchmarking software so I don't have to keep downloading them when I format my computer.

In the past when I format my computer, I have just installed all my games again but I have started buying them from STEAM so I don't have the disks and have to spend hours downloading them again. So is it possible when I get my new drive and install windows on it, I can use my old 500 gig C drive as my D drive and just move all my games over onto my new HDD.

Or would you recommend I get a 120 gig SSD just for games and win 7 and keep my photography software on my old drive. Then would it be possible to swap games onto the SSD drive from my old C drive which would be my D drive.

Hope I made sense 🙂

If you have your Steam software installed on the 500GB which i'm guessing you do..all you have to do, is buy yourself an SSD install Windows etc on it and reinstall Steam to the 500GB and all your files having already been on the 500GB will still be there!!! or, you can use Steam to backup the games to say your 160GB drive, wipe your 500GB and go again fresh on your new SSD and 500GB...once you use an SSD, you'll never go back to mechanical drives for OS installs 🙂

Thanks for the input, I will definately get the 120 SSD, and have a look at steam to back up my games to the 160 HDD. Great advice.

I should explain that my first computer was a 486 DX 266 running windows 3.11 and DOS 6.22 with a 420 Mb HDD, I bought a 500 Mb HDD to go with the 420, I remember installing DOOM and Wolfenstien 3D on my D drive once to see if I could still play the games and for some reason it didn't work, so I have never installed anything on my D drive since, so I have never tried to swap games or run programes from my D drive.

The best thing about that was everytime I formatted my computer, I had to start the game from scratch so games would last me years :). I am a bit fussy when it comes to the perfect clean install , even if an error came up on say my GFX card, I would format again, sometimes 4 times in a day. Then again with win 3.11 and a 420 HDD it only took about 1 hour to install everything.

I was looking at the Sammy 120 gig 840 non pro for around 80 quid mate, any good ? Or do you have any recommendations ?

I normally buy from OCUK, DABS or Ebuyer, but PCWorld seem to have a decent price on a few things, I have just been looking at what pcworld has in stock and they have a 128 gig OCZ vertex 4 for £99, £10 cheaper (£20 if you take off the delivery) than OCUK.
