You are serious when you say you want to put 16 Gb on a Phenom II X4 980 ? I can hardly push my i7-990x at the limit of my 12 gb and I use 4 OS at the time in VM. So imagine with a weak CPU like this Phenom. Future proofing as much as you want, in 2-3 years this x4 will be obsolete and you are talking about 5.

Ok, and in 2-3yrs when a supposed x5 is out I will already have all the memory I need... so future proofing memory to some extent isnt really a bad thing. Ok fine, current times might call it overkill but in even 5 yrs 16gb's will most likely be a standard for most users.

a ya and what make you believe the board in 2-3 years will still use DDR3 ? I learn something in 30 years in this business, you don't buy for in 3 years, you buy for what you need now.

No one knows for sure but it's a gamble I'm willing to take for what memory can be bought for.

so let me introduce you the DDR4 , we not supposed to see them before 2015, or may be 2014 , but who know, they already here. I see 9 chips, ECC RAM for servers, 40% less electricity; I bet the Europe will push them sooner on desktop too.
