New G750JX; how to change touchpad behavior?

This "smart gestures" thing doesn't seem to allow me to change the behavior. What I want to do is assign a small area of the touch pad to register as Mouse3 (clicking in mouse wheel), and I also want to assign the far right side of the touch pad to be a one finger scroll thing. These are common behaviors on other laptops. Is there a way to do it, preferably without editing the registry?

It looks like the Elan driver is customized by vendor, Asus in this case, and what you see is what you get. You could ask Asus and see what they say - maybe you can suggest to them the feature set of another laptop vendor as a starting point for what you need.

What vendor/laptop has the customization features you want? What is the OEM that supplies their trackpad? Can you post jpgs of the config dialogs so we know what you are talking about?

Elan provides the Asus trackpad, and on their site they show a basic control panel add-on:

The Asus Gesture Dialog looks much more feature rich, even if it doesn't give you control over programming additional customizations.

Elan has contact information, you could try asking them, but I think they will refer you to Asus for implementation of the features you want.

FYI, while looking around I found the Asus generic Notebook/Touchpad download area:

From this thread on Elan touchpad config under Ubuntu using the syndaemon - the synaptics touchpad manager - it looks like you could get the Synaptics driver to work if you can find one that will recognize the Elan Touchpad - or configurable to recognize it. The post by wb8nbs is interesting.
    http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2067590

And, Synaptics has a generic driver for download.
    http://www.synaptics.com/resources/drivers

Also of interest is this note at the bottom of that download list:

Note: Installing a generic driver may result in the loss of OEM-customized Synaptics pointing device functionality. Setting a restore point before installing is a quick way to rollback to the previous driver.

Did you uninstall the Elan driver, reboot, and install the Synaptics driver? Can't run both at the same time...
