The most common quote I remember hearing is "I've tried everything" which of course is not true because it would have been working if they had.

That is so far from accurate it's not funny !
If the board is faulty, you CAN try everything and it still won't work... the only thing left is a board replacement, but you can't "try" that now can you...
Picture this :
I have a faulty board... I have tried 100% everything to no avail.
So, what additional help will tech support provide ??
They will go thru all the steps and realise that i have indeed tried everything and will recommend a board replacement... thats all.
Get my drift ??

"I've tried everything I know how to do" would be more accurate, but that's not what they said.

I'm saying it would have been more accurate for THEM to say that they had tried everything they know how to do. I'm not attempting to change my statement because the original was true: they said "I've tried everything", which isn't true. Unqualified, everything means that you have an oscilloscope and soldering iron and you have tested and repaired every piece of electronics involved in your problem. You have an electron microscope in your home and you have examined every chip for flaws, replacing them from a donor board. Everything means when your internet goes down that you drove out to the service provider's head end, broke in, and rebooted the router inside. Everything means you have both prayed and performed pagan rituals over the problem. Everything means *everything*.
I'd like to point out that this debate regarding the definition of "everything" is rather silly and not at all related to the thread topic.

yeah.... desoldering and resoldering components very often does resolve electronics issues however I dont imagine the vendor would be too happy about accepting it back once repairs were attempted and subsequently failed to resolve the issue. Ohh and my Electron microscope in my oxygen free laboroatory is currently under repair as my collidron particle loop went critical last week.
