So Shelly replied a while ago, but I'd been too busy to take the laptop in for repairs. Today it finally got taken in, and to my surprise they said "You need to bring in the battery and charger too" I was taken aback, when I asked why they said "This laptop has been approved for replacement" :O

Tomorrow I'll take in the laptop - with battery and charger!

It still has my SSD and upgraded RAM in it, but whatever that's like $60 of gear.

Make sure you mention the SSD at least. That's like 1 minute with a screwdriver for them to give it back. I'm not sure whether I'd want the memory or not, that machine is cursed!

brother Gorman .. I, imagine this, am speechless. I can not wait to hear the outcome of this.
I have followed this from the start .. this will be the absolute most righteous outcome Asus could
    ever produce.
I deeply hope it so and wish both you and Asus the best.
This is simply great news ... the day you open the box and smile will be a great day indeed.

I have said from the beginning that in the end Asus Always comes through .. let them prove it
    right once and for all .. it couldn't be to a more deserving Member. I'm freak'n Giddy. [I'm sure u r 2.]

Regarding your G53JW which was sent in for repair, we’re going to offer you a replacement of upgraded model due to multiple repairs.

Please kindly find attached the ASUS product replacement agreement.

Please kindly email or fax the completed form back to us. The replacement unit will be dispatched within 1-2 business day once we receive your signed product agreement.

Please feel free to contact us if you have any other questions.
    :O

    It's happening!

The replacement has less RAM, much cheaper HDDs and it's still from the 53 series, but it has a newer CPU and GPU. I sent an email asking if the listed panel is the 1080 or 768 resolution panel (I previously had the 1080). RAM and drives can be upgraded easily, but I don't think I'd want to do a screen replacement.

EDIT: And according to the forums the replacement model, G53SX, also suffers from the same problem that made this one unusable. Though according to Zygomorphic it's less likely to occur. I assume this one will be a new one and not refurbished, so it should be unlikely.
