ASUS G74SX-BBK9: Glossy 60Hz to Matte 120Hz LCD Screen Upgrade

A pleasant day to everyone!

How's everyone doing so far? I hope you all are having a great day so far.

Anyway, my ASUS G74SX-BBK9 has a 1920x1080 Glossy FHD 60Hz LCD Screen, but I'm curious of trying to change it. I don't have to worry about warranty since it's already more than 1 1/2 years old on my care. However I have some thoughts in my head about it.

I've seen threads talking about upgrading a Non-3D Screen into a 3D Screen and have learned that this wouldn't be possible without replacing the motherboard due to incompatibility issues because of the motherboard differences between Non-3D and 3D versions of ASUS G74SX. I'm not going to the 3D path for my ASUS G74SX in short. Here is what I want to try doing: change my laptop's LCD Screen and install a Matte version which has a Refresh Rate of atleast 120Hz.

I tried searching for a 120Hz LCD Screen version for my laptop but didnt see any. I'm fully aware that the 3D LCD Screen is capable of 120Hz and was thinking if I can still use that. I know that the Non-3D LCD Screen uses a 40-Pin LED Socket and the 3D LCD Screen uses a 50-Pin LED Socket.

I know someone might think "Why not just plug a 3D 120Hz External Monitor or TV so you can also enjoy 3D Gaming?". I've done that already and I can say I'm not into 3D Gaming, but I just want the regular 120Hz display for smoother gaming experience whenever and wherever I want without worrying about an external screen.

Can anyone kindly give their insights with regards to this? Hoping for anyone's/everyone's kind responses. Thank you very much and may each and everyone have a great day ahead!

The swap is easy. Your video card will HATE you. You will see a total opposite effect than what you are seeking. I would just go with a 60 hz matte. I have a G74sxbbk7 and i did a 1080 matte swap from 900p glossy cause the glare was driving me nuts. It was great at first but unfortunately our sandy bridge cpu and 2gb 560m's are becoming quite dated and i had to turn mine down to 40 hz for decent performance. Also your MOBO does not have the requred connector or bus speed for the 3d monitor. I would suggest selling and getting something newer or a desktop.

I would advise against the swap too. I have the glossy screen in both G73's and think they're better. I have a matte screen on my desktop, and the notebook screen graphics are just clearer, sharper and more vivid. I don't have a problem with glare as I don't try to use them in brightly lit areas.

Hello. Only one screen that use 40pin dual lvds Connector and is capable of 120hz refresh rate is Samsung LTN173HT02.

Here is link on ebay: http://www.ebay.com/itm/261262322131?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649

Chances it might not work after all so it has to be tested for answer 🙂
