I secured a razor blade in my vice with about 750 mm exposed. I then pressed the CPU corners onto the blade. Once the corner was penetrated, I rotated the CPU from the corner position along the blade to the side position in one smooth motion with the vice acting as a backstop to keep the blade from penetrating too far. This worked like a charm. It was quick, easy and reasonably worry free. Much better than anything I've seen in any video so far.

Lapping went fairly easy as well. I used my desk which has a glass top and rotated the IHS 45 degrees every couple of strokes to insure an even surface. All in all the whole experience was fun and relatively stress free...except I did temporarily lose one of my standoffs for my NH-D14 mounting brackets which caused me to freak out for a couple of minutes. Overall though, it turns out, my apprehensions were unwarranted.

I was able to get a quick 4.8 oc to run realbench with 1.45 volts and a 71 C max core temp, but still didn't hit the 800 mark. After my upgrade to the official Windows 8.1 release I forgot to replace CPUz and I still need to work back through my performance tweaks/settings when I get a couple of spare minutes. I'll be bringing it shortly though.

Thats great Im sounds like you took the best parts of every ones advice and came up with something better. not sure what TIM your using but there is some what of a breakin period for the TIM I say a few hours of some higher temp and you should see some improvement on the temps you have now.

you better not beat my RB score now

I'm thinkin' if I hold out for V.2 and I'm quick enough, I can make it into the top 10...for a few minutes anyway.

Seriously, I'm either missing something or Windows 8.1 is less amenable to good RealBench scores. I can't seem to recreate my previous scores with what I think are the same settings and it's getting under my skin. I must be doing something wrong, but I can't figure it out. I need to get this sorted out before going for the gusto with higher clocks.

There's no point holding out for v.2 because of a variety of reasons:

    1) It includes 2 new tests.
    2) All subprograms are upgraded.
    3) There is more optimization in RB's code itself.
    4) There's an entirely new, 5-digit (or 6-digit if you're fast enough) scoring system. Which means far more variation in between runs and better resolution in seeing what tweaks affect what and by how much.

As you see it's an entirely new beast and scores on it will in no-way be comparable to v1.

Not sure. Was getting 725-735 range before with 4.6GHz. Now, I can't break 720 with fresh RB, the same settings, tweaks, crossed fingers and facial deformations. Disconnecting my external HD helped a little, but I'm missing something. Maybe I'm not holding my tongue right...<shrugs>.
Yep it's the 4770k. I think I might go back and play with my P8Z77 Pro-V with the 3770k for couple days and see if I can coax some kind of epiphany to come to me by pretending I don't care.
