Carefull with reducing the gap too much on the bottom side as you may as well crush the die if you overdo it. I don't suggest lapping the bottom of the IHS.

Nodens, I was scared about the gap too. Finally I had to take the risk. The heatspreader on mine doesn't touch the little board at all. It just sit on the DIY. It's like a bare mount. Never tried to lap underneath, because I was sure I am going to make it worst, but I lapped the top.

Are you saying use nothing between the IHS and my Noctua or just not the Coollaboratory Liquid Pro? If nothing, I've never heard that before or didn't understand what I was reading.

I think i got it, ... we're replacing the tmi inside the processor yeah? and putting the cap back on? or are we leaving them off (lol i'll watch some youtube later after work and i'm sure this'll make much more sense)

haswells that much diffrent than other chips ? (say a core 2 duo?) or is poping the lid off one of them for practice just going to destroy that chip?

Hi All

I see we are talking about de-lidding again. I am no expert but have done it several times with great success. The best and safest way I found to de-lid is to take a utilitie knife blade



And a small light hammer. Place the cpu vertically on your desk or hard surface with the IHS facing you. Place the blade & cpu between your thumb and forefinger squeeze lightly keeping the blade flat against the circuit board. Starting in the corner lightly tap the blade it will cut through the epoxy glue that holds the IHS to the circuit board like butter. Tap until the blade is about 1/8" in to the corner then move to the next corner and so on till all the corners are loose. then with the blade in one corner start working your way around the chip and before you know it the IHS will fall free. This is the best and safest way to do it. Wiggling and pushing on a razor blade and having that blade slicing the palm of my hand does not sound like fun and a trip to the local emergency room can be costly. After you get the IHS off the CPU clean and prepare the IHS for Lapping. If you lap the under side of the IHS that will actually increase the gap between the die and the IHS. Now if you lap the outer edge of the underside of the IHS then yes you will decrease the gap.

PS - Once I am ready to mount the CPU I place it carefully in the socket - apply my fav Tim cool labs Liquid ultra and then place the IHS on top of the die and lock it down. apply more TIM on top of the IHS (pea method 5-5.5 mm) mount the heat sink of your choice. (I have a test bench so if your installing in a case it may be a bit tricky) I have been testing with great success IC Diamond here some info on the bead method
