Still pushing my R3E

Hi everyone,

So, I'm still pushing my R3E and i7 980x. I've seem to hit an overclocking wall due to my skills/experience. So I'd like to reach out to those who know. Here is what my system is currently running at:

CPU-Z
http://valid.canardpc.com/2898719
GPU-Z
http://www.techpowerup.com/gpuz/epnyv/
http://www.techpowerup.com/gpuz/w4qgv/
http://www.techpowerup.com/gpuz/z6655/

I was hoping to be able to push my CPU and Bus a little hard. I have full water cooling on CPU/Motherboard/GPUs. I have plenty of room on the temperature side.

Every time I try to nudge up past 4.3Ghz (either increasing the multiplier or the base clock) my system crashes.

Of course many folks will say: "Wow... that's some pretty antique gear you have there." but I haven't upgraded because:
1. Money
2. This board still has plenty of kick left in it.
3. Because as hot as the RIVE is and 3970x/4970x look ... I'm not quite convinced, its not a quantum leap of power in my opinion, but that's just my opinion.

I'm writing this up, and I'm thinking... maybe I should post screens of my BIOS settings. I guess that would help for starters. So, I'll leave you with that info while I go reboot and take some pictures.

Cheers,

If you folks who are more experienced could maybe show me how to do this in different ways or make suggestions, I'd be grateful.

Outdated? true. But underpower? Never.

You still have a very capable CPU there my friend. And with a 3 way SLI GTX 680 configuration, I bet you destroy all the modern games. I'd just up the multiplier to 22 for 4.5GHz and crank the Vcore to 1.4V. And just start from there.

That's pretty well the reason why I couldn't bring myself to replace it... its just too awesome. I only buy Intel/ASUS(ROG)/nVidia products... I'm a fan boy - even though the other guys make kick ass gear too.

I'll try to set the multiplier to 22 and 1.4v and run prime95 and see what happens. I'm not worried about temp too much, since when the CPU hits 60-65C I usually chuckle and go "Ha... normal operating temp."

Update:
So, I've been running at x22 and made it up to 1.435v ... How high should I go before I should give up safely? I'm guessing if I hit 1.45v and its still not completing Prime95 successfully - its probably a sign that my chip can't make it to 4.5Ghz safely. 😞

Just to put things in perspective for you. The 980X and 990X processors still own the wprime world records.

Moving on, drop your BCLK and increase your multi, I recall that 165 - 170 was my sweet spot for the CPU.

What you have to keep an eye on is your unicore frequency and dram frequency. 1 to 1.5 for the Xtreme CPU
To help us help you - please provide as much information about your system and the problem as possible.
