Ya beat me to it, lol. Comparing anything from EVGA at this point in time to the RIVE is a massive disservice to the RIVE. Works like a champ from day 1. Unlike every evga x79 mobo. Not sold on the dark by a longshot either. There seems to be bios issues again from reading the forums.7980XE on Asus ApexVI

Some brands sell their top model mobos, with a fan on the vrm heatsink, thats pure marketing i suspect..
wanna cool it, point a ultrakaze at the vrm heatsink..Last edited by Rockford; 09-12-2013 at 01:46 AM.

We try to avoid active cooling where possible because ultimately, fans are noisy and they are a point of failure. In a recent R4E BIOS update we turned off the fan entirely until it reaches 85C for this reason. They originally aired on the side of caution but have since found it's not entirely required and have made a PCH heatsink big enough.
The rear IO cover is actually a massive alu heatsink that is heatpiped to the MOSFETs, and the NexFET MOSFETs are much cooler than previous R4E.
Launch date is currently end of Oct.

Yes, as far as i know, i know only 1 pcs x79 board, maybe 2, that actually need a active PCH fan
Its the Extreme 7, if you turn off the pch fan, that board will get very warm, if the sensors are accurate that is..
tried it once (turning off the pch fan), and it went up fast, and high
Note> that board was a Monday sample for sure, so i wouldent be surprised if they had forgot the thermal pads when assembling the PCH/heatsink, or in best case added some chewing gum..Last edited by Rockford; 09-12-2013 at 02:45 AM.

I understand active cooling quite troublesome, but at least make it optional, some ppl may need it.
p.s. I have a sabertooth x79, even with active cooling, the PCH always go over 45C when idle, cause my room is really hot.

Well I might think of getting this as long my 3960x Sandy Bridge-E works with it.. >.< if its only for Ivy Bridge-E then it be pointless for me to upgrade the cpu just to get this board working...
In a way it feels like a replacement to the people that had issues on the Extreme Board due to cold boot issues.. Just as long its responsive just like the Formula boards when you turn on the power switch on the case :3
