Hello everyone,
Here is a little issue I have just noticed. I have two external USB 3.0 devices, the first is a 32GB Corsair Flash Voyager Slider and the second is a 500GB Seagate FreeAgent HDD. When using the Corsair drive, I can plug it into any of the available USB ports (USB 2.0 and 3.0, on the motherboard or the case headers) and it is detected and works 100%. It is with the Seagate drive that I am noticing issues. For the drive, I have both USB 2.0 and USB 3.0 connectors for it (the drive came with the 2.0 connector and I had bought the 3.0 connector separately). Here is the results I am getting depending on which USB port I connect my Seagate drive to:
1) Front USB 3.0 port on case with 3.0 drive connector - Drive is not recognized
2) Front USB 3.0 port on case with 2.0 drive connector - Drive is recognized
3) Rear Intel USB 3.0 port with 3.0 drive connector - Drive is not recognized
4) Rear Intel USB 3.0 port with 2.0 drive connector - Drive is recognized
5) Rear ASMedia USB 3.0 port with 3.0 or 2.0 drive connector - Drive is recognized
6) Rear USB 2.0 port with 3.0 or 2.0 drive connector - Drive is recognized
As can be seen, the drive is not being recognized when connecting it to the Intel USB 3.0 ports (Assuming the front ports and rear Intel ports are controlled by the same chip) using the 3.0 connector. I do not believe this is a drive issue as the ASMedia ports have no issue with the drive.
I have looked this up to see what the possible cause is and initially I was thinking it is the Intel USB 3.0 eXtensible Host Controller for Windows 8 as many people were having issues with it, but the thing that is confusing me is that the Corsair drive does not have any issues with these ports.
Does anyone have any insight on this?
Thanks!!
P.S. What I mean when I say that the drive is not recognized is that it does not show up as a usable drive. Specs can be seen in my signature (to avoid taking up more room in this post).
