??????? Is Overclocking Your G750JX bad for the computer

So is overclocking bad or a good thing to do. Just wondering since i am new to this and i really don't understand the science be-hide the boost in computer performance. Any advice would great ROG friends. I just want to know why you would overclock and what pro and cons come from overclocking ect. I just want to get as much performance out of my JX without braking the computer or damaging it and that also includes lifespan thanks.

Overclocking basically just makes your card work harder. Its most likely NOT going to break your computer. It might slightly shorten the life span. If you overclock your graphics card you might get around 15% better preference from my experience.

GPU: Nvidia GeForce GTX 770M @ 932Mhz

It isn't. matter of fact, overclocking doesn't downgrade or set you back on G-Series or newer laptop. Due to the newer Cooling designs, and more efficiency of late technology. you don't have to worry about overclocking. All Nvidia GPU now has a safe guard that triggers if you go above the system stability and resets. Now of course, certain laptops coolings are very bad and arent meant to support overclocking. same goes for CPU they will just throttle down if temps are exceeding above their life sustainability core temps. but for G-series case, you don't have to worry about it

In over all. Overclocking G-series is ideal because the cooling is far beyond exceeding excellence. you would gain around 15 up to 25 FPS increase depending on the card you have and how well the pasting went on your laptop (some times, some units will have poor paste thus leading to high temperatures> risky overclocks)

As long you keep checking the temperatures when you OC. you will be fine.

i think how to oc is important for you. if over oc, i think you will make damage for laptop, like high temp, so asus do not suggest oc and lock bios to oc.

You'll get a lot of mixed opinions on this. Some (many support specialists and some technicians) do not recommend it. You run the risk of higher temps, instability, etc.

Many enthusiasts on the other hand will tell you that as long as your keep the OCing within safe clocks (usually around 10%, depending on the card), then all should be well. You still are liable to run hotter though, regardless.

In the end, it's really up to your performance needs. Personally, I don't recommend it for laptops. Their design does not allow as efficient heat transfer for components as desktops do. And then as Pitcher mentioned, many times, the BIOS or vBIOS is locked to prevent you from doing it in the first place.

Thanks so much ROG friend that helped answer my concerns about OC. I think i wont do OC because to be honest i just use my laptop to play games, surf the web and do some homework on office 13. When i overclocked my laptop from hmscott advice i did see an improvement on 3Dmark. That the only time i saw the improvements. When I play games i noticed A way louder fan speeds and a hotter laptop compered when i didn't do anything to my g750jx and keeped it stock. I just wanted to see what it was all about OC.

Thanks for sharing fab5yo, I hope you had fun learning more about how OC'ing works.

Demystifying an opaque subject to the point of making an informed decision is more than many will take the time to acquire.

Over time, continuing on gaining more perspective, you might find that the process you went through OC'ing can apply to many other aspects of life.

At least you now know you aren't tolerant of fan noise 🙂

What game(s) did you experience more fan noise from OC'ing than stock settings? Was it full time noisy, or just during high action scenes?

For my use if I am using the hardware fully, adding a within spec OC isn't going to increase the noise, just shorten the path to the desired result. I haven't noticed day to day additional fan noise from OC'ing CPU or GPU with games or other applications.

Did you try changing the voltage offset to -100mv for CPU/cache to reduce heat? The range of success is -50mv - -125mv depending on luck the draw on CPU. It makes a big difference in some applications and can cut the fan noise.

Did you notice if the high fan noise came from the left or right side vent (looking from the keyboard/screen viewing side)? Left side is CPU, right side is GPU.

Well hmscott i notched the higher fan nosie from the CPU the left side. When tried the OVerclocking advice you provided i notched the CPU fan louder enevn when just sufring the web but the games i have been play as of late or black- list Tom Clancy (R.I.P) and Black-ops 2. I really don't know what to do. I have the setting from the last thread about overclocking and now i have other saying it a bad thing. So as of now i am back to stock JX with GPU tweaker at default and UXT at default until i get some more insight on what to do. What do you think (hmscott) since you are pretty knowledgeable

The "OC"ing is no more than unlocking the multiplier for the CPU cores, and the matching one for the cache. There is no massive increase of core clock or any pushing of any limits, at all. There is no bad at all involved. 🙂

On the scale of OC'ing it is literally the least that you can do and still call it OC'ing.

The GPU tuning is more along the lines of an OC. And, that noise would come out the right side...

If turning on the XTU tweaks is causing the fan to ramp up during Browsing, something else is causing the ramp up. I never hear the fan ramp up for browsing, video watching, etc - it takes real work like high CPU/GPU usage jobs, I don't even get fan ramp up from most gaming, and then I mostly hear the right side GPU fan.

IWatch your background processes, using the Windows Task Manager, set to sort by highest CPU usage, and watch for process(es) sucking CPU.

This one of the reasons to OC, to scare up the hidden problems that only make themselves known when pushing the limits 🙂
