2 Dimms or 4 for Asus Z68 with i7 3770K CPU on MIVE-Z

Hi guys,
Long time no speak - had a hellish year and PC had to take a back seat but lifes levelling back out now, as it does and the time has come to upgrade my ram as this 8GB is no longer cutting it and I keep running too low when rendering video.

Something in the back of my mind tells me that 2 large DDR3 modules were better than 4 smaller ones on the Intel IMC when overclocked. (Its a 3770K running 4.5ghz under water)

The Mobo is Asus Maximus IV Extreme-Z

Can anyone confirm?

Also, any recommendations on 16GB that works well on this Mobo overclocked and running somewhere around 2133 will be gratefully received.

Guess my 8GB of Sammy super ram might be up for sale... I see its hard to get hold of now, as I tried to just buy another 8GB of it!

Hey Stu good to see you here again.

Yip you have it right. It would be less stress to the system if you had 2 x 8GB sticks or ram rather than 4 x 4.
To help us help you - please provide as much information about your system and the problem as possible.

Hey mate,
Pleased to see your still on here helping everyone out as always pal. Hope life's treating your well and your still making the numbers?

Thanks, I was sure that was the case but thought I would quickly check with the experts before I blew my cash on something tat wouldn't work.

Been looking at some stuff that isn't listed on the compatibility charts and seems to be aimed at Haswell and XMP 1.3, do you think it will work ok in my old MIVE-Z board at a slower speed like 2133?

I must admit to never having used Ram by these guys, always opting for the "big names" but I wonder just how different can they be, since they are after all just binned silicon.

Both will be good for your needs, I like the Patriots they make very good kits of ram by the way. And the £10 difference is worth it for the timings.

Ordered. Thanks mate, your support is awesome. 🙂

Hows the overclocking world treating you? Have Asus hired you as a tech adviser yet? 🙂

Nah but I will tell them you said I should.

OCing is going well right now, got back into the thing after some small health issues. Have a thread some place about my attempts at AMD world records, not quite there yet.

And currently my partner and I head up the Pro OC league table for Q4 Cup. So not to bad at the minute.

Awesome mate - Pleased to hear it.
I hope to get my head back into it soon as well, fixing almost going bankrupt has taken all my time and attention up this year so far... but I shouldn't have taken my eye off the ball and have nobody to blame but myself.

Thankfully things are levelling out again now so I can start leaving the staff to do their bit and cut back on my 75hr week and enjoy some of the toys again... PC included.

Naturally ive been looking at that 4770K and a new Asus Mobo... but wondering why? LOL
