    Overclocking a 4930k on a rampage 4 extreme Black up to 4.7 ghz

    Unbelievably too easy! Followed the 'listy. wordy' thread up on the stickies.
    Memory Corsair vengeance pro 32 gb
    H110 AIO cooler
    Corsair 1200 ps

    All i did was to set memory profile to xmp and turn the multi up to 44. I didnt touch the voltages or any thing else. Check the pix for truthiness.

    A few things I noticed:
    the board sets the voltage 1.36 in cpuz and it rises up to 1.376 under load. And i didnt touch the load line calibration settings.
    the cpu is ALWAYS at 4400 mhz regardless of whether it's idling or not. Unlike an EVGA dark that i worked on-it will idle down to 1.2 ghz in idle
    there were NO PROBLEMS (touch wood) NONE.
    I installed only the drivers-none of the other fluff that's on the second tab of the driver cd (ramdisk, AI overclock, etc)

    So now I feel like I set sail to cross the Pacific in a canoe. Yea! I am floating! But now what do I do? The bios settings are burgeoning, bewildering, befuddling. Look at these three screen captures:

    The first one is what is seen under the extreme tweak tab. The next two are what you find when you open up the digi control option.
    I just walked into the batcave and there are so many buttons and switches-I just want to make the batmobile go faster-where do i start?
    The work of the bios engineers is invisible and only they know how precariously close to failure this board is tuned. I guess I should start by enabling offset voltage control. But where do i specify the offset? The bios says it wants 1.024v but i am seeing 1.36 in windows. clearly something is up somewhere that is allowing this. Perhaps it's the fact that my load line calibration is set to auto. And then there's these 'new settings' CPU current capability, CPU voltage frequency? I am from the days when you used a number two pencil to add voltage by tracing over resistors. (we old people knew that graphite conducted electricity LONG BEFORE graphene was 'discovered'. And by the way, if you make a carbon chain of just carbon atoms and double bonds like this ...=C=C=C=C=C=... it's the strongest material you'll ever see...tensile strength that could be used to weave a cable to pull the space station to the moon. But hat's another story...)

    I am SO OVERWHELMED at how easy this overclock was-granted it's not much of an overclock at 4.4 ghz, but I am at 60deg only with room to go. Just looking for an experienced RIVE BE tuner to chime in with their experience.

    My memory is running great too. with vtt and vccsa at stock!(1.075 and .956) There is even a second VTT voltage> What for?

    That is actually how it is meant to be. The belief that you have to change every setting (well quite a few of them) is not valid.

    Offset is very easy.

    Set offset mode
    +
    0.020

    LLC set to 4 or medium depending what your bios shows you. Auto is often ultra or high.

    Seriously it is that easy with the quality of bios work that the ASUS ROG team put into it.

    Check the R4E guide for more info - many of the crude settings are the same on both boards.

    To get offset mode, you set CPU VCore Voltage from manual mode to Offset.

    To get SpeedStep workig in the OS, make sure the Windows power profile is set to balanced (and default loading thresholds). That's if you want the CPU to run at a lower speed when idle.

    The rest, yes it is easy - that's how we wanted it to be.

    Well, I got to 4.5 ghz simply by increasing the multi-and it was stable to IBT. It automatically upped the voltage to 1.424 according to cpuid. However hwinfo reports much less.

    I then increased the multi to 46 and set to offset 0.02 as recommended. volts are read at 1.476. now I am getting nervous. My temps are getting up there too as you can see.

    I didnt see anywhere to set the voltage manually but its late and i'm tired so i probably overlloked it. Anyway 70degrees and 1.476 volts is up there. I know that cpuid overestimates voltages so i hooked up that amazing device that reads voltages in realtime. it says target is 1.455 and nominal is fluctuating from 1.45 to 1.475. On IBT, the target is 1.455 and nominal will occasionally touch 1.5. Not much change really so i think the base voltage is way too high and can be turned down. Didnt see the setting for that tho.

    I need to figure out how to turn down these volts before I fry my chip. Amazing that it has not blue screened ONCE. Yet. But i'll keep trying.

    Well, I set LLC to ultrahigh from extreme. Those voltages dropped right down (and so did the temps!)
    Offset .02
    Stable at 4.6 ghz
    Offset .06
    Stable at 4.7 ghz

    But on offset, I cannot set the base voltage manually? Is this correct?
    Also, my boot voltage is left to AUTO. I tried 1.4 but it crashed-How does one go about optimizing boot voltage?

    Any way this chip would not go above 4.5 ghz on an evga dark so it seems this board is able to push the chip a little further. still as expected, IVY-E has a hard wall and for this chip it is at 4.7 ghz.

    okay, i am up to 4.7 ghz but really cant go higher. My temps when ibt bailed were 70. So I dont think better cooling will help.

    There is a tipping point where a whole heap more voltage is needed for a very small gain. Looks like you have got to that point.

    The wall depends on each particular CPU sample. All CPU samples are not the same. Some may hit it at 4.5. Other rare golden samples may go beyond 4.8. It all depends on your lack with getting a CPU sample. IB-E on 4.7 is an above average sample, so consider yourself lucky.
