I'm actually a bit shocked at how the prices have fallen on 4k already. Samsung has a 55" 4k UHD for $2999 right now. I paid $2100 for my 1080p Samsung earlier this year, hard to believe 4k is already only a 50% premium.

I still have serious doubts about when 4k will go "mainstream" though. The problem, as I see it, is that there's really nobody who stands to benefit from it, and a whole host of people/industries that will actively fight it. HD made it to the mainstream because standard def TVs had saturated the market, so manufacturers knew they could not only sell billions in new merchandise by pushing HD, but they could also steal the movie industry's entire base by making theater quality movies available in your own home (see also: Blu Ray). Nobody stands to benefit from UHD. Maybe nvidia & amd? And even that is a pretty big maybe, considering that mobile is the obvious future of gaming, not UHD desktop. And with broadcasters already dealing with 2 different standards, do you really think they're in any rush to devote more bandwidth to adding a third set of channels to your local lineup? Not likely.

And all joking aside, we all know which industry *always* leads the way in media formats. Has anybody heard of 4k prn? lol

So the question becomes, who is going to push UHD into the mainstream? I can't figure out any good answer.

    OK you guys,

how about a 4k panel with Nvidia g-sync??

    from Anandtech website

    http://www.anandtech.com/show/7582/nvidia-gsync-review

Despite NVIDIA’s first choice being a TN display, G-Sync will work just fine with an IPS panel and I’m expecting to see new G-Sync displays announced in the not too distant future. There’s also nothing stopping a display manufacturer from building a 4K G-Sync display. DisplayPort 1.2 is fully supported, so 4K/60Hz is the max you’ll see at this point. That being said, I think it’s far more likely that we’ll see a 2560 x 1440 IPS display with G-Sync rather than a 4K model in the near term.

Yes, G-Sync would go hand in glove with 4K...would effectively allow you to run 4K on lower card specs and still get away with a good gaming experience....bring it on!
