From a technical point of view, GPT is better, and I believe that Windows 8 supports it well. Windows 7 could support GPT, but didn't always like it. I'd recommend the GPT at this point.

for a new untouched ssd, w8.1 installation should take care of everything. it's pretty much straight forward.
in the bios, disabling secureboot, disabling FastBoot, and enabling Launch CSM are important so that devices other than the OS drive can boot.

thinking of a ssd purchase / upgrade myself.
I have a g75 vx, however I downgraded my os to win 7 pro.
so, if I do install a ssd and want to use win 7 pro...is it best for me to install in mbr??

both work fine for our laptops.
if i remembered correctly, w7 defaults to mbr for fresh install to untouched ssd.
if you wanna run the laptop in uefi mode, you need to:
1. use disk management to make the new ssd a gpt disk first (in your current windows);
2. use a uefi-compatible windows install media for the OS.
in what mode does your current w7 pro run? if it's in uefi mode, then you will need gpt.
