PCIE 3.0 worth it yet for dual GPU's

    Heya all,
I'm about to go dual GPU's and I'm running a Maximus V Formula with an i7 2600k (O/C to 4.6Ghz). I've just been thinking though because when I ran it dual GPU the Maximus switched the PCIEX 2.0 to 8x instead of the 16x. Is it worth upgrading to a 3570k to unlock PCIE3.0? Or not bother? The performance increase I saw in the initial test (had to send one card back for RMA so just waiting on that) was amazing but just thought I'd get some ideas?

The other plan was if not upgrading the CPU then swap my RAM with some nicer ones. It's not bad it's 1866 @9-11-9-27 but it's strontium which is a random brand. had some G-Skill Ripjaws 1600 @9-9-9-24 but I donated them to my Brother, were they better for gaming? Is the timings or the clock speed most important when it comes to games?

    1 GPU = 16x
2 GPU's = 8x + 8x ( look in the manual what it says about where to put the cards )
    3 GPU's = 8x + 4x + 4x ( if i dont remember wrong )

Hi kkn, For three GTX 680's, maximus v extreme and 3770k all of which are pci express 3.0 run at x8 x16 x8. Hi Bouji as for your RAM question, Both the RAM speed and timings are important for gaming. The fastest speed with the lowest (tightest) timings will give you the best performance. Your G.Skill Ripjaws was definitely the better RAM. It is not a huge increase in performance going from pcie 2.0 to pcie 3.0. At most you will gain about 5 Frames Per Second. It all depends on the game really, some games do not show any increase in performance at all.

RAM for gaming is pretty much of a muchness...you're not going to get a noticable difference getting a faster kit. the CPU changeup will give you better performance clock for clock and PCIe 3.0 should net you a small increase but again not a whole lot.

Thanks guys. After some research I think I'll stick with the 2600k as the CPU upgrade doesn't seem worth it nor pciex3. Will look at getting some 1600mhz CL9 RAM though and double it to 16gb will benefit me more I think!
