5.1 onboard audio issue

Hi all, i am using the on-board audio on the Rampage IV black edition mb and Logitech 5.1 speakers they are hooked up via the 3 analog cables, no audio is coming from the rear speakers and that option is grayed out in the audio control panel, if i choose 7.1 setup and deselect side speakers and select the rear it works but i don't have 7.1 it does not sound right in games.
In the 5.1 setup there is a side speaker option that is selectable but no rear sound either.
If i remove the software and driver and use the built in windows driver it works fine and even a 1 year old realtek driver i get rear sound but the sound quality is not the best.
Have tried older drivers and the latest but nothing works, any ideas guys?
Using win 8.164bit if that helps?

Hi,

I have to do this fix every time I update my drivers. You can choose 5.1 and add a registry entry to swap the side/rear port.

open regedit and go to

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E96C-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

Then find the realtek entry (normally 0000 or 0001)
Go to Settings\Drv7102 (or whichever is listed)

Add a new binary value named Pin15 and set to 07 00 00 00

You will now have audio on the surrounds. I only have to do this reg trick with Win8/8.1, works fine on Win7

Hi thanks for your help, there is already an entry there Pin15 05 00 00 00 i change it to 07 00 00 00 and reboot and it resets back to 05 00 00 00?? and still don,t get the rear speaker option its still grayed out.
I don,t really understand why its setup like this? It was the same on my Gigabyte setup i had last year which had the ALC889 and that was on w7 64bit, anyway i found a driver from last year R2.71 6.0.1.6873 which has rear speakers working in 5.1.
I have a Soundblaster Zx that i was going to sell because it could only fit between my two graphics cards slightly blocking the top cards first fan, may just use it anyway which sucks was keen to use the onboard since it has decent enough sound for my old ears lol and give my cards some breathing room.

This method works with Win7 but not Win8./8.1

Not sure why it reverts back to 05 00 00 00, maybe grab a new driver from Station Drivers and try it again?

Hi tried those drivers still the same issue, found this info http://www.reaper-x.com/2012/02/13/how-to-remap-retasking-realtek-onboard-jacks-ports/ going by that 07 00 00 00 is the code for side speakers and 05 00 00 00 is for the rear speakers but apparently the pin numbers can change between driver versions so going to have to play around with it a bit i think.

I just upgraded to windows 8.1 and having same problem with my Logitech 5.1 speakers setup and not getting any sound from center and sub. I tried various setting in windows, realtek sound manager nothing works, is there any other settings which I am not aware of. With my previous windows 7 everything was working fine. Any rampage iv black edition owner please post if you know how to fix this problem.

Thanks

I bought Sound Blaster - Z, and I'm happy with this decision. On the other hand there is no sound under Linux. I think I'd give few emails to Creative.

Hi
This driver from last year worked for me R2.71 6.0.1.6873 and the built in window 8.1 sound driver works also, but why should we have to use old drivers? Anyway i decided to not sell my Soundblaster Zx card and have installed that and all is well;)
Hope Realtek fix this issue in a future driver update, this issue was also present in my Gigabyte X79UD7 setup that i had last year, that board had the Realtek ALC889 using win7 so its not just a win8 issue its the realtek drivers!!

Nothing will be hurt by running it in 7.1 mode with the side channels disabled.
Some software even expects this behavior (Creaitve X-Fi, looking at you)
