2x 1GB 5850 dropping 6GB DDR3 -OR- dropping 6GB DDR3 2x 1GB 5870 / 1x 2GB 5870

With my current system, it's been suggested my GPUs are bottle necking the rest of my system.

CPU: i7 930
Mobo: Rampage III Extreme
RAM: 12GB Dominator GT 1600 7-7-7-20
GPU: 2x XFX HD 5850 1GB
PSU: Silverstone ST-1000p 1000w
SSD: OCZ 240GB Vertex 2
Case: Cooler Master ATCS 840
CPU cooler: Corsair H50

What I would do, is drop 6GB of Dominator memory to get either 2x 1GB 5870 or the ASUS 2GB 5870 Matrix. Only issue is that the Matrix is a LTO [Limited Time Offer] item and they may not be around when I find the money to grab a 2nd for crossfire. So I'm thinking of grabbing 2x ASUS 1GB 5870s instead. Should this be done? Or should I grab the Matrix or 2x 1GBs?

I would get one Asus 5870 for now. Then will upgrade to crossfireX or even 6000 series later on

Well, I found an amazing deal. I dropped 6GB of memory and the two 5850s. AKA, subtract $870 from my balance, and picked up two GTX480s for 920. So for an extra 50$ I got a huge upgrade.

I think you'll be fine with 6GB. Even if you decide to do F@H the latest Windows client uses much less memory for bigadv than the Linux one did.

I can also get another 6gbs later rather than updating two 5850s an wasting 600$. Glad I found this deal and newegg slacked off so I can get the order change in.

If I am right Cross-fireX will use only the amount of memory of the smaller card. So the 2GB one wuold use only 1GB. I would follow Otto advice and use a single 5870 ( which is enough for anything now ) and get a 6XXX, a 69XX one would be better since the 68XX under perform a 5870.
