how loud is the WD VelociRaptor 1TB 10,000RPM hard drive

Im only a few days away from picking up my new pc build and I was wanting to put in a secondary drive for my build and I found a 1TB WD VelociRaptor running at 10,000 RPM I have read and watched some reviews and I would like to know if I get one of these drives will it have noisy read sounds from the read/write heads accessing data? Is there a way to dampen the sound at all if it is very noisy? It will be in a Corsair 750D case and my primary drive is a 512GB Samsung 840 Pro - does anyone have one of these WD drives that they can recommend/not recommend about it I will be using it for rendering, data storage and gaming. Thanks, gabrielknight.

I have the WD velociraptor 300GB in my second machine and I can hear it from time to time. It does make like a grinding kind of sound but not all the time. You wouldn't hear it while playing a game. I've had it for 5 or 6 years and it is still going strong. Other than the occasional grinding sound it is still a decent HDD.

i have the same HDD inside Cooler Master silencio 650 case.
with open case scenario, i could hear the drive.
closed case, no discern-able sound that i can hear sounding like the drive.
no siggy, saw stuff that made me sad.

I've been running different Raptors for about 11 years. I've found them to be just a little bit louder than normal 7200 rpm drives. Their noticible if their running full speed. But their worth the extra noise. Just make sure you have ample air flow around them. They run pretty warm.

You're probably better off getting a 240GB Samsung EVO SSD and a WD Black Drive. No need for the 10K. You will enjoy the higher IOPS of the SSD.

Get the 2TB WD Black. The Raptor's have a really bad track record of failing prematurely.

Where are you getting your info about the bad track record of the Raptors? I've never heard of anybody having trouble with them. I've got a 11 year old 36 GB drive out there that's still used as a main drive.

I should have quoted that as bad track record with me. I have had at least 6 of them before and 5 of them have failed. Raptor/Velociraptor. I gave up and started going with WD Black / RE4 drives. RE4 drives are bulletproof. Have them and the SAS variant (XE) in a lot of servers.

In fact, 1TB RE4 drives are $10($94) off with promo right now. You can put two of them in RAID0(Stripe) for cheaper than a 1TB Raptor. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136798

In a silent setup (open case), its very noisy when running, but it has a very low level of vibrations so

bad pick for a very silent build (open case), its much easier to noise proof a 5400 rpm HDD to avoid resonance in the case, and by doing so, this solution will be more silent when running, compared to the raptor

When i am saying very silent build, = max 18db when running

Raptor idle = high motor noise/low vibrations
silent 5400rpm HDD idle = low motor noise / more vibrations

of my 3 pcs HLHX, non has ever failed in any way.. think i got a HLFS also somewhere / best mechanical drives i ever bought..

i think 7200 rpm drives are awful in every aspect,

and just for the fun of it..
