Ubuntu 13.10 Dual-Boot Issues

I've been trying to dual-boot Ubuntu 13.10 alongside Windows 8.1. I have the ISO on a CD, and space partitioned for install, but whenever I restart my G750JW, the Asus boot goes directly to Windows 8.1, ignoring the live cd. Anyone know how to fix this?

Should be able to hit Esc early in the boot process and open the boot loader.

Be advised, when I installed 13.10 on a separate set of partitions from Win7, it took several tries to get Ubuntu to install properly.

Ask in the Linux forum on this page, and some of those guys have all the know-how you could need. I'm talking to you, Zygo - haha.

Thanks, I managed to turn off the Asus fast boot and it now allows me to select Ubuntu.

Good catch. I didn't think of that off the top of my head, but that will do it. Fast boot removes some of the initialization checks, as well as doesn't go polling all devices for bootable media. Make sure you have ScureBoot disabled, and LaunchCSM enabled. Let me know when you get it running!

I have a G75v which I want to use mostly with Ubuntu 13.10 and occasionally with Win7. It came with Win7 Premium preinstalled and an ocean of stuff I didn't need so I wiped both discs and reinstalled Win7 on sdb and it booted OK and worked just fine. Then I installed Ubuntu 13.10 on sda and now every time I start up Ubuntu boots without the grub list of options and there is no sign of Win7. I have attached Gparted screen shots of the hard drives.
Any help in sorting this out would be appreciated.

First of all you can use <ESC> or <F8> or whatever your notebook requires to get the boot screen, like mentioned in post 2. It should display a list of hdd's for you to select. Just select the second drive, which should start booting Windows 7. (You have just the reverse of what I have on my PC. I have Ubuntu on Disk 2 instead, and need to pull up the boot list (early in the boot sequence) to select the 2nd disk to boot from. But ordinarily it boots only Windows.) You could also get SuperGrub disk and burn it to a CD or to a USB flash drive for booting whatever it finds on all of your disks.

When you installed Ubuntu, did you tell it which disk to install the GRUB loader to? Normally, the default is to install the GRUB loader to the first disk in channel order (sda), but not always. Try swapping the disk boot order in the BIOS and see if that helps. If not, run the following at a terminal:
sudo update-grub
