Maximus VI Hero OCing problems... new to OC

ItsGonnaHurt
Level 7
Appreciate any advice:

Put together the rig below in Aug, and I've been trying (without success) to get a stable OC. I've looked through various messages and guides. Between system variations and "not quite the same symptoms" I haven't been able to find a stable OC >3.8GHz, which just seems under-potential.

Can anyone provide some setup recommendations for the below listed config?

Thanks in advance,

Hello ItsGonnaHurt, Welcome to the ROG forum. With your cpu cooler you should be able to hit 4.4-4.6 GHz. Download cpu-z, real temp and prime95. When you get those installed just holler, I can help you overclock your cpu.

I have about the same setup as( Its Gonna Hurt). But I have GTX650GPU and I have been doing good with OC @ 4.6GHZ But recently it started freezing up on Ghost multiplayer and picked up a glitch intermittently in MW3. I am also OC my GPU with GPU tweak. Any setup tips that may help make it more stable.

Nate,

Thanks for the assist. Got them dl'd. I'm in Japan, so the time difference may lead to slow responses but I'll be checking regularly.

the default turbo boosts to 3.9 so not being able to get above 3.8 might signal an issue.

Can you describe the issues you are having? Some of the settings you have tried? Need more info.

NZXT Kraken x60 | Asus GTX780 Direct CU ii OC | Razer tiamat 7.1

Thermaltake Xaser Vi | Windows 8.1 64bit

Coldstatic,

Currently using the Optimized defaults in the bios. Tried using the OC button in AI Suite 3 at first. Things worked fine for the next 6-8 hours, then random restarts began. Over the next 2 days, it happened more and more frequently. So I went back to defaults, and tried stepping it up via AIS (been a while so I don't really recall which things I messed with). Over the course of the week, nothing really maintained any stability, so I ended up back at Optimized defaults (BIOS) - 3.8GHz. Most recently I tried the CPU step-up. 4.6 and 4.4 never booted, 4.2 ran fine for about 6 hours, then warm-booted after I started a game (State of Decay). Brought it back down to defaults and decided to ask for advice. I should have written down the stuff I tweaked. Sorry I do not have any more detailed information.

i would need to know what settings you have set in the bios.

Be aware that some of the newest games on the market are using avx instructions. avx instructions allow the processor to self overclock and if this is not taken into account it can cause problems with overheating and cause a lockup.

Describe the "freezing" a bit more. is it a windows blue screen or is just the game freezing up?

Try this, go into the bios extreme tweaker tab, Set AI Overclock tuner to manual, sync all cores. Set the cpu core ratio to 42 and the cpu core voltage to 1.25v. See that the cpu target speed is 4200 MHz. F10 and Enter how does it go? If you can boot to windows return here and we will use those programs you installed to check temps and stability. With 32 GB of ram you might need a bump in the system agent voltage as well.

Made the switches. Booted fine. I have the programs ready. I'll be standing by.
