Budget: 3500 USD

Main uses of intended build: Gaming / Watching bluray and other HD movies / Audiophile

Parts required:

Asus Maximus VI Extreme

Cooler Master Cosmos II Casing

Cooler Master Silent Pro Hybrid 1200W Power Supply Unit

Nvidia GeForce GTX 780Ti

Intel® Core™ i7-4770K Processor (8M Cache, up to 3.90 GHz)

Dominator® Platinum with Corsair Link Connector — 1.5V 16GB Dual/Quad Channel DDR3 Memory Kit

Samsung 840 Pro 256 GB SSD

Previous build information: none. I'm currently using ASUS laptop A42j Model.

Monitor resolution: 1080p and 4k
Storage requirements:SSD (OS/Games) & SATA (Files)
Will you be overclocking: not sure
Any motherboard requirements (no. of USB, Xfire/SLI, fan headers): MAXIMUS VI EXTREME (Future SLI)
Extra information about desired system:

Hi everybody! I would like your opinion and pro help since its my first time building my own rig. My setup was inspired by one of ROG video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=grd-ltAm2Gw). So basically, I'm trying to copy it but not the whole thing. Please guide me if I lack something or need something to improve this setup. Im planning to use 1 monitor either 1080p or 4k capable. I plan to buy GTX 780i and upgrade later. Also, wanted to know if this setup will require thermal or liquid cooling or will it survive with just fans? With the said setup, will it last 3-4 years atleast?

Also, any recommendation for a good monitor? Preferably, 4k around 23 - 25 inch.

all setups require cooling, since your getting a K chip ill assume your overclocking otherwise theres no reason for a K chip, so yes i would also suggest a closed loop water cooler atleast a 2x120 as long as u can fit it in your case, itll give you slightly better results then some of the top air coolers, and give you massive results over intels stock cooler while also not restricting you on ram or on the first GPU, which some larger air cooler will hit

with your ram, dont connect the corsair link if your installing any asus software as they dont play nice = cause crashes
also with ram and haswell's, less sticks are better, you say 16GB so you would want 2x8GB instead of 4x4GB
another thing haswells are all different and are touchy with ram so if your going with anything above 1866 you may not be able to set the ram at that with the CPU overclocked, but that be something youd need to see as i said there all different

nice video card, that should be able to handle 1080p or 4k on a single monitor, going sli will allow you to run 4k on multi monitors, for just 1 monitor tho i dont know if youd need sli but then again youd be able to judge for yourself after the build when using it

also depending on uses you may not even need the extreme, if you plan on SLI and an Audio card (or anything else in x16 pci-e lanes) then yes by all means extreme it up lol

but if you just looking for a gaming board there is the Formula VI, comes with the latest supremeFX audio, but only supports 2 way sli, quad SLI (2 card 4 GPU's) and 2 or 3 way crossfire

altho having SLI on the formula shuts down the other x16 lanes so if you again were planing on sound card or pci-e ssd then extreme be what you wanted again
CoolerMaster HAF 932 Advanced/ Maximus VI Formula/ I7-4770K/Swiftech H320/ Corsair HX850/ G.Skill Trident X (2x8) 16gb 2400MHz/ 2x 840 EVO 120gb(Raid 0)/ WD 1TB HDD (Backup/Storage)/ EVGA GTX 1gb 560 TI/ Asus 12x bluray combo

Thank you Tokens210! Its my first time creating something like this so I rely on research and what not. Not, really familiar and have little knowledge when it comes to building a good gaming PC.
I relied on good part reviews but honestly im not sure if they are even compatible. SO, if you see something wrong, then by all means, stop me 😛

I will surely overclock it given the chance. Again, its my first time overclocking a PC so I will need to read more to that later.

Can you give me a good brand for water cooler or any guide or links so that I can imagine on what it will look like? Seeing the youtube video from ASUS, I think the cosmos II has 4 fans? not sure, but I'll take your suggestion seriously.

For ram, I'm not sure what to buy since as you mentioned for Haswell, its better to have less sticks are better. If that's the case, then maybe i like something 2x8gb. But if you can recommend what type of RAM to buy or any recommendations for my planned setup. 16gb is enough for gaming I guess. If I plan to either use it as is or to Overclock it as planned.

As for the GPU, i may be do SLI but Im only planning to use 1 4k monitor. So, as i've understood, if I will not use more than 1 monitor then 780ti will be enough. And if ever I do SLI i might decide using only 2 780ti or Titan x2 but not more than 2 way (for now). I just want my games in max settings and good FPS.

Moving forward, for the MOBO, you got a good point that if in case that my plan is to use 1 monitor and that the formula offers 2 way SLI and it also comes with supremeFX audio (no idea how good this is). Well, first question, is the supremeFX audio on formula VI good enough with games, movie, and music? If it has better built in audio or atleast on part with xonar, then might as well go formula since my main objective is to play AAA games and watch and listen to music.

OC panel is love. That's one of the reason i wanted the extreme, but cost wise and use wise...

Pls guide me to the right path 😛

I will say what I always tell people about On-Board sound. Test the on-board sound before you add in a card. It's very easy to add in a card later if you think the on-board isn't very good. I have a 5.1 surround sound system, a pair of HD650's and a pair of $1500 dollar Sennheiser HD800's that run just FINE off of the on-board SupremeFX.

Cosmos II has crappy custom-loop water cooling support. If you're in that price range and want to do a custom setup, I would suggest the Cooler Master Stacker 935 or the Corsair 900D. If you want to go a closed loop cooler, go a Corsair H100i or H105...

IMO, the onboard sound is good enough, I've been using it for quite some time myself for gaming, movies and music.
As for the Extreme vs. the Formula, I tend to lean toward the greater options particularly more PCI-E slots because I really enjoy tinkering with multi GPU systems.

I'll also agree that a 2x8GB RAM setup will be much easier than trying to run 4x4GB.

Below are some of my recommendations for your needs, based on my own personal experience.

Dominator Platinum is over-rated RAM. You can get Vengeance Pro or G.SKILL that has better frequency and timings for cheaper. My RAM is Vengeance Pro 1866/CAS 9 and is timed the same or better as Dominator(Pro) equivalent RAM but I paid only ~350 for the 32GB KIT. 😄 You can pay around half that for a 16GB kit. If I benchmark my system in AIDA64 for Memory I get in the top 3 reference area...

Almost all Corsair products are overpriced.
Only their AIOs, and their case fans are not.

@powerover9k - Hey! thanks for the tip! Still deciding if i'll go with formula with SupremeFX or Extreme.

I checked your Sig as well and saw your case and googled it and its awesome! also, i noticed that you are using the rampage IV black edition, being a noob, is it better than "maximus VI formula"?

With my current build, is it okay to use the NZXT phantom 820 or CM Storm scout 2 instead of cosmos? come to think of it, its not as big so its a huge advantage! smaller case the better. Just not sure if its good for the build that im going for.

For the onboard sound, ill stick with that and if it sucks, then ill go ahead and upgrade, for now ill follow your advice. Im currently using B&W P7 for my music. Not sure if it will do good in terms of gaming or watching movies.

As for the ram, I checked both Vengeance pro set 16gb (2x8gb) & 32gb (4x8) and I was told "fewer stick the better for haswell". So, do you still recommend i get the 32 gb kit or stick with 16gb?

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820233546 (32gb)

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820233536 (16gb)

@Gunslinger - Will follow the onboard sound first and upgrade if I must. If i get your advice correctly, you are choosing extreme over formula for future upgrade? is that correct? but if Im planning to stick with it for a while and only use 1 monitor or 2 monitor, stick with formula instead of extreme? Did i get your idea?

AIO cooler
I've checked both fan and has its own share of pros and cons.
the corsair, is not compatible with win 8 and im trying to an 8.1 windows if I cant find a win 7 copy. If you were me gunslinger, would you rather go for the thermaltake or if you can recommend other AIO cooler that would be compatible with win 8 and 7.

Ram

I'll decide which to get. I might end up with win 8.1 Pro or non pro and will have to see if I really need 32gb set or 16gb set. I might get the CORSAIR V Pro 1866 model.

Moving forward, can you help me on choosing a case? for my set up is it okay to get a mid tower instead of uber tower type? any suggestions that will compliment the build that vying for plus the thermal cooler and fans to be installed. Overclocking safety for i7 4770k.

abvolt and antronman thanks for the extra tips 🙂

=============================

i7 4930k or 4770k? which is better for rampage IV Black edition?
GTX TITAN BLACK ED or GTX 780Ti?

I've done a little research and i came up with this... Is this better than my first one?
