OS stats for ROG users - see which OS is most popular!

I've been tracking the trend of OS use on ROG site, and the Win 8 uptake is interesting to see.

36270

The free update means many upgraded from 8 to 8.1, but it's a slowing trend. Still 35% use Win 8, which is not bad for a 'hated' OS. Win 7 continues to fall slowly a few 1/10ths a fortnight but it will become the new XP. XP is dropping 'quite fast' now but I guess it'll plateau out like Vista at sub 2%. Android is still growing very strongly, but iOS isn't.

For those who surf on mobile - we will fix the site in the next few months to work better on your devices.

Unless Mr. Nadella kicks the Windows division up the arse, nothing will replace 7 in the hearts of many. I can live with Win 8 + Start8 and never seeing Metro, but some way to get rid of it and the charm bar entirely would give a lot of people the push to upgrade. Sure, some people love it, but many more don't! Also I bought Win 8 for $30 on offer, otherwise I'd still be using 7!

I'm waiting on Devil's Canyon and the Z97 Formula, and so I have a choice to make.....

I have an unused Win 7 Ultimate 32/64 bit (full retail version) laying around since my last PC died, but I'm considering Win 8.1 Pro 64 bit from a longevity standpoint....

Which would you throw on a totally brand-new rig? My parts list follows, including parts I don't have yet....

ASUS Maximus VII Formula
Intel 4790K (or whatever the top LGA 1150 HT CPU will be in June)
EVGA GTX 780 SC 6GB
Samsung 840 EVO 1TB SSD
Seagate 2TB hybrid SSHDD
Swiftech H220X CPU cooler (will expand to include CrossChill cooler on the Formula board)
G.Skill 32GB CL10 2400
Corsair AX860i
Thermaltake Overseer RX-1 with craploads of fans

I pretty much want to throw this thing together, do some mild, 24/7 stable overclocking on the CPU and GPU, and not touch it for the next 5-6 years except cooling loop maintenance as required. Not looking for any benchmark records, just a nice, fast, daily-use machine. As I'm hoping this will last me several years, I'm leaning towards Win 8.1 to stave off the day they try to end support for Win7!

Oh yeah, the ROG SWIFT will augment my current 1080P when it's released, for a dual-monitor setup.

Would you do Win 7 or Win 8.1?

Well its at least a bit surprising that w8.x is picking up.

The sheer recentment I noticed all around me.

When 8 was launched I was flabbergasted by those colorkids tiles. I almost smashed them with a sledge hammer. 2 days and I fried the install dvd in the microwave (wauw now its sparkling).

Win 8.1 I tried and liked it a lot more. Recently created my first 8.1 "slimmed" unattended installer (taking care of the stupidity that upgrade versions cannot be used with fresh install.. What if your house burns down, what if my brothers toddles decided that my pc looked somewhat thirsty and gave it a bottle of lemonade : I asked Microsoft this, answer nope buy full version)... My a**.

The slimmed version, kicked out al bloat wear, smashed skydrive, destroyed all metro apps, gives me full ownership, GOD Mode, immediate boot directly on desktop. (no OMG you have to use your ms account to login.. Says who) After tweaking stripping etc... I am pretty happy with how it all works.

So for those, that didn't try it yet,... Give it a, go, on Hyperthreading tasks it is performing often better than in Win7. Nuf said...

Front page upgrade to Wordpress 3.9 makes it mobile happy should be within the next month. A well overdue forum upgrade hopefully within 3 months, as we are still evaluating new package options to turn this place up to 11 😄 It's been in the pipe 6 months already...

Now I see why there were always pop ups from AV about ROG not being safe. So you were secretly spying on us. 😮 Well played, Richard. Well played.

Next statistic: "GBs of porn stored on HDDs per ROG user", starting in the 100s...

😛

Pahani - Go 8.1 + Start8 and you'll never see Metro again. I find it much faster than Win 7 personally and enjoy the little things like being able to pause a large file copy.
