GTX 780Ti memory overclock differences

Was just going through the top scores within the 4770K builds over at http://www.techpowerup.com/forums/threads/unigine-heaven-4-0-benchmark-scores.198888/ and found it interesting that I can drive up my memory speed on the Asus GTX780Ti to such a high level (2025MHz) compared to some other guys yet there is no way I can get close to their clockspeeds even if I turned down the memory speeds to stock value. Asus tweaker wont even allow me to try above 1228 for the clock which seems to be ok as I have a 100% failure rate at anything above 1180. Meanwhile it seems the clockspeeds they get are due to it being SC versions or not being Asus?? My card is fully water-cooled (EK-fullblock) and the GPU never report higher temperatures than 45 degrees C thus the SC cooling system is clearly not the difference.

Thus compared to just about anything on the forum there is no one that has such high graphic memory speeds. Is there anyone that has good explanation to such differences?

Well, there might be a whole number of reasons...maybe they don't want to push their memory maybe memory OC doesn't do much for this benchmark maybe their particular card performs best with this particular core/memory OC combination.

It is often the case that even though the card remains stable at a certain OC it is not performing at its best. I almost always find that running memory OCs at the peak of possible gives worse results than running lower OCs where the card is happiest

Have you tried less mem OC

Also these cards are made with different memory by different companies at different times I believe....sometimes Samsung and sometimes Elpida and this can have an effect on OCability...Samsung clocks better...is the word on the street...

Thanks Arne,

I am happy with my result and tweaked everything by starting with the GPU overclock but with that as the only means I got around 1750 in the score so the rest is GPU memory boost entirely. Nothing else changed in the setup. Just found it strange that my memory numbers were 125 - 150 Mhz faster than others effectively when looking through the whole list (the above was just the top extract.. (I have not been overclocking anything for the last 8 years so just trying to figure out by reading numbers on various sites 🙂

The explanations you give seems reasonable enough.

Hmm maybe I should go into politics LOL 😉

OK, so sounds like you did your step by step OCing...maybe they didn't or their memory limits them....did you see any of your mem chips when putting on the EK block....Samsung ICs?

I had Samsung on my Titans and they clocked +500 on the memory...swapped to Titan Black and was afraid of less but they came with some Hynix that does the same...+500 nice and stable. people say the elpida memory not so good...

🙂 Yes and it really shows that even though others numbers are posted you still have to tweak around in different directions anyway. I did not check what memory chips are there as I had no clue on the differences but will make sure next time.
