Imagine you have $400 to upgrade it for editing HD videos.

What would you buy?

Hmm for video editing I'd get a 3770K and a H100i and OC the 3770K to 4.6GHz 😄

Larger PSU + Better GPU.

Try this:

Video Card: Asus GeForce GTX 760 2GB DirectCU II Video Card ($239.99 @ Newegg)
Power Supply: EVGA 850W 80+ Gold Certified Fully-Modular ATX Power Supply ($129.99 @ NCIX US)
Total: $369.98
(Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available.)

I would recommend Arne's solution, but you'd need a better PSU which would raise the cost to more than 400USD.

Thanks. The whole system is drawing 130W normally so there should be headroom for a proper CPU.

You'd recommend an i7 3770k over an i5 2500k and 16GB RAM?

What about this - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819113284 ?

Would you recommend a CPU over a GPU for mainly editing huge video files?

Yes I would...the 3770K has hyperthreading effectively giving you 8 cores the i5 does not...

And OCing it would improve performance a lot. More RAM would be good but upgrading that don't buy a second kit to combine with the one you have even of same make and model. Get a single 16GB kit.....

Thanks very much for your advice! Will get the i7 3770K as suggested. This will be a better option than the AMD FX-8350 Black Edition Vishera 4.0GHz (4.2GHz Turbo) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819113284 and 2x8GB RAM?

Yes, I think the Intel CPU is better for what you want...and of course fits your motherboard....for the AMD CPU you would need a new motherboard too
