Memory - For The Maximus VII Hero

Sorry for the re-post. This was originally posted under the Maximus VII section, but the thread got corrupted somehow and I could no longer see the original text, and no one could post a response for some reason. I asked the Admin to delete that post.

So here is what I originally asked ...

Memory For The Maximus VII Hero
I'm looking at purchasing the M7 Hero once Asus releases the product and have been researching memory options, specifically the timing & MHz specs. The plan is to run either an i7-4770k or it's successor in the refreshed Intel line once the new CPUs are released. 16GB ram total. I plan on running simulation software with this system, specifically X-Plane 10. I've got to keep my flying skills up somehow since I've been out of the cockpit for a few years.

I'm planning to OC the cpu mildly, but I'm not going to push the memory past specs. I'm going to just hope to get as close to the the manufacturer's specs as possible. This is an area I'm not well-versed in, as you can tell.

My specific question for the ROG members is this ... with respect to specs and timings, which of these G.Skill DDR3 options would be faster? If you have a better suggestion for memory, please offer it up with your reasons why. I'd love to hear your opinions. Let me know if you need more info from me, thanks in advance.

G.Skill: Trident X 16GB (8GBx2) 1866MHz - 8-9-9-24-2N 1.50v

G.Skill: Trident X 16GB (8GBx2) 1600MHz - 7-8-8-24-2N 1.50v

G.Skill: Trident X 16GB (8GBx2) 2133MHz - 9-11-11-31-2N 1.60v
Link: f3-2133c9d-16gtx

All three of these parts show the Maximus VII to be on the QVL. The latency specs seem very good for the 1600MHz DDR3, but the transfer rates and clock rates are higher on the other models. I'm not sure which way to go. All three options aren't cheap, so I was hoping you folks could point me in the right direction. Thanks.

I believe that the original Haswell won't be compatible with Z97, and only the refresh and Broadwell will be.

While I'm not sure, I believe that the 2133MHz kit will be faster.

If you don't want to try to tweak the RAM yourself, I believe there are Corsair Vengeance Pro kits with tighter timings.

er... it's Ivy Bridge that isn't compatible, (1155) - any 1150 CPU is (ie Haswell, Devils Canyon etc). Any boards bought from older stock may require a bios update for 4790K but this can be done with Bios flashback, (download new bios on another machine to a USB stick), without the need to boot the board - Asus manual describes how. Guru indeed!

Z97 is compatible with Haswell, the refresh and Devil's Canyon. Z87 for some stupid reason only up to the refresh.

Wait the 4670k and 4770k are not compatible with the Z97 chipset? I was under the in-presston that all haswell's where compatible with the Z97's. Am I wrong if so there would be no need for me to upgrade because I have 4670k.

My understanding, but correct me if I'm wrong, is that all the current Haswell processors (i.e. - 4770k) are compatible with Intel's Z97 chipset / socket 1150 motherboards.

Hello

Yes they are compatible.

Yeah, they are.

Although 4790k is worth the wait, believe me. Get a 4670k first, then get a 4790k.

Antron, so is the 4790K going to be the successor to the 4770K, and is that considered a "Devil's Canyon" CPU?

Hey, I was wondering if there would be a problem running a 1.65V memory with the setup I am building. I will be using the VII Hero and i5 4670K while waiting for the new K-series. All the memory that I am looking at mostly at 2400 speeds and up is 1.65V apart from this kit:

http://www.hardwareversand.de/2133+Low+Voltage/66729/16GB-Kit+G.Skill+RipJawsZ+PC3-17000+CL11.articl...

But I simply can't find out if it is compatible or not. The Finnish site for Asus has no QVL and it won't let me go to the US site. 😕

Ideally I would like to get the following kit - can any one help me if it is compatible or not?

Thanks in advance. 🙂
