Offset Problem in Rampage IV Gene. Voltage too low and too high!

Hi all,

I have an R4G and trying to do an offset overclock. See settings at the bottom of the post...
Everything seems really unstable. In manual mode I reach 4.2ghz (x42 multiplier) stable at around 1.32v it works from 1.31v but does a fatal error in p95 after an hour. I was excited by that in the beginning.
I turned it to offset mode it reported 1.32v first and then it reported 1.156 to 2.1 when I boot ( I am a bit confused by that but lets keep moving.)
I started with an offset of - 0.005 LLC Medium - cpu 120% . It had a crash on idle on load it was 1.36v which was OK. I raised the offset to reach 0.045 and that made it 1.376 on load and 0.845 on idle ( it was marginal ) it stayed stayed on idle for quite a while but it didn't work well. I raised the LLC to medium and tried to reduce the offset. I found that the load offset is too high and the idle offset too low .
I have a serious problem when things get stable at 1.38v x42 only. I know that the machine can work at 1.32v which is a bit strange why it adds so much more voltage and reduces so much more. IS there a way to make sure that the idle voltage stays above 0.85v?

By the way if I put the offset to Auto it works at 1.32 stable at idle and it does lower the voltage at 1.296v on load! Why is that ? This is not what it supposed to do ! Needless to say that it reports Fatal errors at p95 after 5 minutes.

Is there any way to increase the idle voltage without reaching 1.4v on load ? IS my 3960x crap? i have a few 3930Ks that are a piece of cake to overclock. Meaning they are stable in a much broader range of voltages. Another machine i have with ASus p9x79 pro it does 0.83v idle to 1.336 on load rock solid.

The Offset voltage rules are programmed by Intel into the onoard power controller within the CPU. You have to work within the limitations of Offset mode load and idle VID with LLC - outside that, there is nothing you or we can do.

Ok Here is the weird thing. I have another R4G (bought the together so they must be from the same batch) with a 3930K @x43 and i can go from 0.848 @x12 to 1.312 @ x43 with regular settings (running prime 95 for twenty minutes and seems great with 1.312v @ x43) . Is it my 3960x a really bad chip?

Is there anything that i can do to stabilise the machine at low frequencies ? The only stable offset range i can find is from 0.856v to 1.41v at load with a multiplier of 42. This seems wrong. Are all 3960x like that ?

Hello

As Raja stated above the VIDs are programmed into the CPU by Intel. These voltages are set from idle through full load and the offset alters this entire range. Increasing LLC will allow for a lower offset voltage at the expense of added stress to the VRM. This is really the only option available for this issue.

Thank you Raja and Praz. I switched to manual voltage and it is rock solid. I love the idea of offset though.
So each i7 has different settings even if they are the same model - eg 3930k ?
