Wondering about G46 Mods (New Owner)

Hey guys! So after blowing 110% of my savings in highschool to purchase the Asus G53 I decided to now go with the Asus G46 for college.

It was supposed to be here today but it's not >.<

Anyway, after some research I am interested in a few mods:

- mSata
- 900p or 1080p screen
- Chance to put Asus edition 860m in there?

I have done a good bit of searching for my answers but have found nothing written in stone yet.

1) Which brand mSata do you suggest? I have already found the video of disassembling it (:

2) I would loveeee to have the pixel density of the 1080p screen on the 14 inch laptop but the only one I can find is the one HIDEvolution uses which is an IPS monitor that has excellent color and everything, but also very high response time. I'm wondering if anyone has had the chance to game on that monitor and if during that time any ghosting was noticeable.

Would it be recommended to install the 900p screen instead?

3) I heard somewhere that the Asus GPUs use a different socket than others, but I'd like for someone to confirm that. I'd also like to know if the cooling system was simply transferred over if there would be potential to switch out the 660m GPU with the 860m? They are both 28nm from what I have found, though I don't know if they are comparable in size etc.

I will be posting a review of the laptop about a week after receiving it 😄

Thanks for any help by the way

hey I think the video you found was mine 😄 anyways I'm using samsung msatas SSD PM83 and it's been two years with the mod, still going strong. I would suggest you try to find a half size msata ssd now since they are more common than before, that way the msata wouldn't have to bend like mine.

For the screen I upgraded it to 900p and it is a HUGE difference from 720p. I would recommend 1080p for future proof, been looking at this website *panelook.com* and there are 14 inch 4k resolutions now, it's expensive but I would do that instead if i have the chance. (around 250 per panel)

As of GPU, It's going to be impossible or require extreme mod to change it, in my opinion not worth the hassle. If you going to pay 300 for a 860m might as well get a laptop with it installed

Yes it was! 😄 And I noticed you taped yours down since it was full size xD

That website is awesome!! I have been eyeing up the AUO B140HAN01.1 but that 25ms response time worries me. Any of the ones on that site stand out to you as what you would buy next? (I need to be able to play bf4 at med settings at least). And I'd like to have pretty nice color quality as I use an Asus 24in IPS Monitor on my desktop.

And I wish they had a g46 with the 860m xD I was hoping it would be an individual card like in my g53 but it seems to be integrated into the mobo which means I can't get a clevo upgrade thing :3

yeah, they definitely need to do a new G46 with 870m this time, since the temps of these new graphic card are cooler and more efficient. If they throw out a 14 inch ssd raid with 870m and 1080p I'll upgrade without blinking.

Along with a mini mSata of course

I agree, however as far as I know only the 860m is maxwell where as the 870m and 880m are the Kepler architecture

I'd upgrade without a second glance, after receiving my laptop in the mail I love it! Considering buying these two things for it though:

that's the screen i would get for 1080p, not so sure on the I7 because performance wouldn't be much difference for gaming, unless you play certian game that require CPU alot or you do video rendering

I bought my G46 from http://www.hidevolution.com with the I7-3740QM CPU and 128GB mSATA installed already. After using the laptop for a couple months and not being really happy with the display, I sent it back to hidevolution to have a 1080p screen installed. The 1080p screen is amazing the colors, contrast and viewing angle is way better then the stock screen. The 660m GPU has no issues playing games at 1080p I play BF4 on it mostly when away from my desktop rig and it gets a average of 40fps with a mix of ultra and medium settings @ 1080p.

Oh and the response time is nothing to worry about there is absolutely no ghosting using the display for gaming..
