gpu solution for 1440p gaming

Hi!

Since rog swift monitor is coming soon I thought about upgrading my gaming setup,

I currently have asus vg248qe and nvidia 770 4gb gpu. My question is, do i sell my monitor and get swift, or do i just keep gaming @1080p (is 1440p really that much of an upgrade over fhd?)

Also, if i get to higer res, i will need more gpu power. Do i just get another 770 4gb and sli, or do i sell my gpu and go with 780 6 gb sli or 780 ti sli? I play games like bf4 and crysis 3, and I would like to get at least 60 fps at ultra settings on 1440p.

i would say IF you get the monitor and try it out before switching graphic cards to see what you get.
if it dont get the amount of FPS you want then you can upgrade the graphic card to the desired one you want.
you can use the old monitor as a second screen, like expand desktop and mabye use it for TS or what ever program you use.

Hi Jakob

If you have the funds for it I would say do the upgrade...it is a big leap and visually stunning. The difference between 24" 1080p and 27" 2560x1440 is huge and the Swift with Gsync will be gaming heaven.

As far as GPU I would upgrade that too if you have the cash about. A 780Ti will perform the same as as a pair of 770s pretty much so SLI 780s or 780Tis will keep you gaming at high resolution at ultra settings no worries...

Ok, so if i get the monitor i will almost for sure have to go with 780 sli. I have considered two cardsasus rog poseidon platinum and asus strix.

So, which one should i get. Strix has 6 gb ram and poseidon has support for liquid cooling in the future. The price will probably be around the same. Which one should i get?

like i posted, try it whit the card you have now, and if it strugles upgrade.
personaly i would do 1 card at a time when it comes to new cards, if you have the monney for it.
lets say first 1 780TI and do a heavy graphic test, if it dont go up to the amount you want, then get a second card of the same you have from before to SLI.
you "can" use the 770 as physx if that is an option, if you SLI the bottom card ends up as physx as default. ( typos i know ).
if you go that way you need a large PSU, even sli 2x 780's you need a large PSU.
in the 1000 - 1200W range for sli, 1200 - 1500W for 3x sli to have some headroom.

You don't have to get dual SLI 780s. I keep seeing all these people that think that because it's a cool new technology, they need to have insane hardware.

Like I tell everybody, G-Sync is made so that you don't have to have that insane hardware. You can just get whatever fps you get, and the monitor will match its refresh rate to that.

Your GTX 770 would be fine 🙂

But if you really want to, you could grab a Stri-x 780.

If you are a Skyrim gamer with a lot of mods or use the memory on the gpu for some specialist computing task I'd go for the 6gb card...but if you are a normal gamer I'd go for the Poseidon. These GPUs perform even better on watercooling and really come into their own.

I ran 2560x1440 on one GTX680 and very quickly decided to double up for decentish framerates running top detail level...I then moved to dual Titans and these were much better but still able to be brought to their knees by the right combination of settings. SSAO and high MSAA and ultra plus tress fx of whatever combination it was in Tomb Raider, for example, dropped the framerate to 40fps! With Gsync thus would be fine but Gsync needs at least 30fps to work and better 40 or 50....

If you are happy running high instead and FXAA then of course you need less GPU horsepower and a pair of 770s will do that no sweat...

Naw. I'd go for the Stri-x or the DCII.
I don't like the Posideon one bit honestly. I like the direction the VII Formula is going, because aluminum is not for WC bro.
The tiniest microscratch, the smallest particle of aluminum sent adrift and you get galvanic corrosion. Aluminum is also really likely to cause ion transfers.

Along with that, the Posideon costs just about as much as a GTX 780 DCII or reference + EKWB waterblock. Which are much better, because they aren't aluminum.

Is that true? They have an aluminium channel? If so then sure, I'd get a refference 780 and an EK waterblock...in that case I'd get a 6GB 780 and waterblocks...best of both worlds...

Wow, i didn't know poseidon has aluminum tube. Thanks for telling me!

So i decided that if i buy swift monitor i will run a benchmark test like kkn suggested. If fps get too low, i'll try to sell the card and get strix 780. I will then maybe add another one in the future (if new games that come out will drive fps below playable).
